Zhang Lao'er specializes in Sichuan liangfen and noodles. Our first-timer combination is yellow liangfen, sweet-water noodles and chilled liang gao: two savoury bowls followed by something cold and sweet.
Four things to order
- Yellow liangfen
- Soft yellow pea-starch jelly with chilli oil and garlic water.
- Sweet-water noodles
- Thick, chewy noodles in a concentrated sweet-spicy, sesame-rich sauce.
- Chicken cold noodles
- Cold noodles with shredded chicken and peanuts in a bright sour-spicy dressing.
- Liang gao
- Chilled rice cake with brown-sugar syrup, a cooling finish after chilli.
Branches and ordering
- Wenshu Monastery main branch
- Near Wenshu Monastery in Qingyang, convenient for visitors but busy at mealtimes.
- Dongzikou old-street branch
- On Dongzikou Old Street in Jinniu, described as a simpler neighbourhood branch with more local customers.
- How to manage the heat
- Ask for less chilli if needed and try a small portion of sweet-water noodles first. Use another branch or visit off-peak at busy times.
