Chengdu gifts range from hotpot base, rabbit and pastries to panda design, tea and Shu embroidery. We recommend thirteen ideas and where to buy them, with practical notes on food restrictions, packaging and fragile items.
Sichuan flavours
- Hotpot base
- We recommend Mingyang for stronger heat, Haorenjia for a gentler profile and Shujiuxiang for spices. Check ingredients, heat and oil content before considering airline restrictions.

- Dengying shredded beef
- Thin, crisp, numbing beef; we recommend the established Zhangfei brand. Check whether the actual product is crisp dengying shreds or conventional jerky.

- Hand-torn roast rabbit
- Braised then roasted rabbit with firm meat. We recommend Wangma and Lao Huangji, with vacuum packing for travel.

- Spiced rabbit heads
- Aromatic braised rabbit heads, with Dengshi and Shuangliu Laoma recommended. Distinctively Chengdu, but consider whether the recipient will be comfortable with the form and eating style.

- Sichuan cured meats and sausages
- Cypress-smoked pork has a preferred fat ratio; we recommend Guihuazhuang and Wang Daye. Meat products may face strict international travel restrictions, so check the rules before buying.
Tea, pastries and sweets
- Gongting pastries
- The old pastry shop near Wenshu Monastery is recommended, particularly Napoleon slices and pepper-salt pastries for sharing.

- Chengdu gaiwan tea
- We recommend Mengding Ganlu and jasmine Piaoxue teas, optionally with panda-themed gaiwan ware for older recipients or tea drinkers.

Panda-themed design
Craft and more formal gifts
Where we recommend shopping
- Chunxi Road Times Square
- Panda-themed shops have been listed on different floors, including 8, 15, 21, 29 and 30. Locations can change, so check the building's current directory rather than relying on one floor number.
- Gongting pastry shop near Wenshu Monastery
- A broad range of freshly made pastries near Wenshu Monastery. Check shelf life and avoid buying more than you can carry or consume.
- Kuanzhai Alley design shops
- We recommend Panda Grandpa and Shuoman for Shu embroidery and design. Tourist-area prices may be higher, so compare craftsmanship and after-sales terms.
- Neighbourhood markets
- We recommend neighbourhood markets, including Guoji Sichuan Specialties, for hotpot base and cured meats, sometimes with tastings. Hygiene, labels, shelf life and meat restrictions matter more than a ‘local’ claim.
Buying and carrying gifts
- Buy cooked food near departure
- For rabbit heads, roast rabbit or sweet-skin duck, confirm vacuum sealing, production date and shelf life. We recommend buying a day before departure. Vacuum packing does not guarantee ambient stability or border admissibility.
- Compare beyond tourist packaging
- Compare several shops or neighbourhood markets before buying tea and hotpot base in Kuanzhai or Jinli. Elaborate packaging does not guarantee product quality.
- Check airline and destination rules
- Oily or liquid hotpot bases and meat products may have cabin or checked-baggage restrictions, while international borders impose separate food rules. Ask the airline and check the destination; shop shipping is subject to the same import rules.
- Choose for the recipient
- For colleagues and friends, choose shareable beef, rabbit snacks or pastries. Tea, Shu embroidery and bamboo craft suit more formal recipients; pandas suit children. Consider whether rabbit products or toys are appropriate for the person.
