Chongqing 1949 is a historical production staged near Ciqikou, set shortly before the city's 1949 liberation. We highlight rotating seating, stage machinery and a narrative involving imprisonment and sacrifice rather than light entertainment. Verify schedules, tickets, seating and admission rules with the theatre.

Stage and story

Rotating immersive stage
Audience seating rotates through 360 degrees with the story, changing between Ciqikou docks, stilted buildings and the Zhazidong prison in about ten seconds. Gunfire, river sounds and seat vibration carry viewers between settings. 'World-unique' is the venue's wording; the practical distinction is the rotating, mechanical staging.
Several interwoven storylines
The story centres on people held at Zhazidong and Baigongguan. It interweaves the Lin family's three brothers making different choices of conviction, imprisoned martyrs refusing to yield, and underground Party members facing love and sacrifice. Together the strands connect family and belief, imprisonment and integrity, and personal love with a shared ideal, showing the Hongyan martyrs holding to their convictions at the end of their lives. Reading the synopsis at the theatre entrance helps clarify the relationships.
A weighty ending
At the end, the Five-Starred Red Flag advances from the depths of the stage towards the audience and spreads across the auditorium. It connects the dawn the prisoners never saw with the theme, 'This flourishing age is as you wished,' moving many spectators to tears. The stage action and emotional meaning are explicit, while individual responses naturally vary.

Theatre, transport and schedule

Address
999 Jinbi Main Street, Shapingba, next to Ciqikou. Use the theatre name and address printed on your official ticket.
Metro and parking
Use Ciqikou on Line 1, Exit 1 or 2; for reference, an 8–10-minute walk. Drivers can navigate to the theatre car park. Plan the return around crowds and last trains.
Duration and performances
For reference, 70–75 minutes without an interval and typically three to six performances daily, with examples at 14:00, 16:00 and 19:30. We recommend an evening show for a stronger atmosphere. These are not all fixed daily performances; select from the official date-specific schedule. With no interval, plan drinks and a toilet stop before taking your seat.

Rotating or fixed seating

A/B rotating sections
Seats rotate through 360 degrees with the stage and offer close views of the performers' subtle facial expressions. We recommend these seats to healthy adults seeking strong immersion who do not have vertigo and are comfortable with motion.
Who should avoid rotating seats
We advise caution for pregnant visitors, people over 65, children under 1.2 metres, and those with vertigo, heart disease or hypertension. This is not a substitute for official restrictions or medical advice; discuss your circumstances with the theatre before booking.
C/D fixed sections
Fixed, non-rotating seating offers a stable, elevated view across the full mechanical stage and lighting. We recommend it for families, visitors with older people or children, and anyone prone to motion sickness; it also offers good value. Check the seating map for obstructions and sightlines.

Historical background and visit order

November 1949
As the Civil War advanced and the People's Liberation Army approached Chongqing, retreating Kuomintang forces massacred nearly 200 imprisoned revolutionaries at the Baigongguan and Zhazidong sites of the Gele Mountain military-intelligence prison complex on 27 November 1949. This became known as the November 27 Massacre; Chongqing was liberated two days later, on 29 November. The production's imprisonment, conviction and sacrifice are grounded in that rapid movement from atrocity to liberation, not in an abstract fictional era.
A possible day around the show
We recommend Baigongguan and Zhazidong in the morning, Ciqikou later, then the theatre. Reservations, opening and transport for the historical sites are separate; the three are not one ticket or a guaranteed easy route.

Tickets and admission

Use official sales
We recommend real-name purchase through authorized channels such as Maoyan and avoiding scalpers, with often strict refund rules and earlier holiday booking. Check the actual seller, terms and release time; no booking service is provided here.
Arrive early
Late entry to rotating sections is not permitted. Arrive 30 minutes early for security, storage, ticket checks and the synopsis, and follow the theatre's actual late-admission policy.
Temperature and refreshments
We recommend a light layer for air-conditioning. Drinks and snacks are not permitted inside; check current security and storage rules.
Child admission
Children under 1.2 metres may enter free without a seat, one per adult, while taller children need a ticket. Read this alongside the rotating-seat cautions and ask the theatre whether the production and section are suitable.
