The walk and its landmarks
- Wukang Mansion
- Start at this French Renaissance-style landmark. We recommend the opposite street corner for a full view and afternoon rather than harsh midday light.
- Wukang Court
- An open courtyard complex with gardens, galleries and restaurants, suited to a slower browse.
- Anfu Road drama centre
- A cultural landmark, with a changing theatre programme and a distinctive entrance.
- Yuyuan Road extension
- Continue towards Yuyuan Road for more shikumen architecture mixed with newer shops and cafés.
Timing, transport and street etiquette
- Best times
- We recommend 09:30–11:30 or 14:00–17:00, avoiding the busiest weekend midday period.
- Metro
- Use Jiao Tong University on Line 10 or Changshu Road on Line 1, then walk or cycle to the route.
- Shoes and distance
- For reference, 1.5–2 hours on foot; choose comfortable flat shoes.
- Do not obstruct the street
- The pavement opposite Wukang Mansion can be crowded. Keep photographs clear of traffic and pedestrians, and have a backup for popular venues with long queues.
