Know what to check before you pay again.
Prepare your wallet, identify the exact screen symptom and keep an independent payment path. The guide distinguishes official payment rules from account-specific outcomes and practical suggestions, so you can resolve the first transaction rather than risk a duplicate.
- What was checked
- The cited official payment, wallet and cash-handling instructions, including account setup, transaction confirmation and support paths.
- Known limits
- Your bank, card, phone number, passport verification, merchant and wallet account can produce different results. Fees, limits and availability are not live guarantees; this site does not access your account or payment records.
Alipay: your first payment wallet to set up
Use the official Alipay app for iOS or Android and its English interface. Register with your own international mobile number, then open Me → Bank Cards to add a card. At a shop, use Scan to read the merchant's QR code, or Pay/Collect to show your own payment code. Check the merchant, RMB amount, selected card and any fee before you approve.
Where do I start?
Use your own international number and travel passport, then link an eligible card. These are three separate stages: an account can exist before identity or card verification is complete. Read the result of each stage rather than assuming installation means payment is ready.
How do I check whether it really worked?
After a small purchase, open the wallet's own transaction record and find the merchant, amount and status. Learn this screen before an urgent purchase. A camera opening, a QR being recognized or a bank notification alone is not the same as a completed merchant payment.
WeChat: messaging plus a second way to pay
Install WeChat as well, rather than treating two cards inside one wallet as a complete backup. Register with your number and look for Me → Services → Wallet. If Wallet is not visible, follow the current in-app activation route. For card verification, use the name, identity information and issuer-held phone number requested on your own screen.
Why is this a separate backup?
A second wallet can help when the first app or merchant integration fails. It is not independent of your bank: if both wallets use the same declined card, the same issuer can still block both. Where possible, prepare a different issuer's card as well.
What if I cannot find Wallet?
Check that you are using the current official app and follow its own activation or help flow. Do not install a regional wallet or modified app just because an old tutorial shows a different screen. If the required service is not available to your account, use the physical-card or cash backup while seeking official support.
The other apps worth installing before you fly
Keep your home bank's official app for security approvals and transaction records. Install a map that works for your device and a translation app with an offline Chinese pack; save your hotel's Chinese name and address. Add your train, hotel or airline's official app only if you already use it. This page covers payment in detail; the separate connectivity guide will cover eSIM, maps and app downloads step by step.
Why keep your bank app?
A payment can fail in the wallet while the bank is waiting for you to approve it. Open the issuer's own app to check the transaction, available funds and any verification alert. Do not rely only on a wallet notification.
Why download map and translation tools before departure?
Save the Chinese place name for navigation and show Chinese phrases when asking for help. Download offline language data while you still have a reliable connection. A translated screen does not replace checking the merchant and RMB amount.
Which apps should I not treat as my payment backup?
A travel eSIM supplies data, not a bank card or ordinary SMS number. Apple Pay or Google Pay acceptance also depends on the merchant and credential. Keep a physical card and RMB cash independent of your phone wallets.
Where can I see an official payment-success page?
These are external links to the original Alipay and WeChat Pay websites, not official images used in Slow China. No publisher image is displayed, embedded or hotlinked on this page. Opening an official PNG in a new tab is still only a link. We have not obtained permission to reproduce it. The WeChat page contains an actual success-page example; Alipay's references explain its completed payment-code flow and transaction records.
Can these links open overseas without a China VPN?
The answer depends on the network—not simply on whether you use a VPN. Our point-in-time HTTP tests on 30 October 2026 used independent Globalping probes in the US, UK, Japan, Singapore and Australia, without requesting a China VPN. These measurements do not cover every country, mobile carrier or future outage.
- WeChat's current guide and official PNGReturned HTTP 200 on all five tested eyeball-network connections. The PNG returned an image response; this does not prove every page resource will always load.
- Alipay's two help pagesWorked on the tested UK, Japan, Singapore and Australia eyeball networks and the US datacenter network, but timed out on the tested US Verizon connection and one Japan datacenter connection. Access is not guaranteed everywhere; a timeout does not establish that a China VPN is the answer.
See the probe evidence and limits
Globalping labels the selected probes ‘eyeball-network’ (end-user connections); this is not a claim that we tested every ordinary home, phone or public Wi-Fi network. The separate Alipay checks above recorded both successes and timeouts. WeChat's old link returned redirects to this current official guide in the first five-country check, so Slow China now links directly to the final page. The initial Alipay US/Japan datacenter checks also remain public below. Earlier HTTP 200 results from our own computer used a configured proxy and are not presented as proof of ordinary overseas access.
If an external page will not open, the essential payment check remains on this page: inspect your wallet's detailed transaction record and ask the merchant to reconcile the existing order. Do not pay twice just because a reference page is unavailable. A reachable reference link also grants no image-reuse rights.
See the actual official success-page example
The official merchant guide says a successful payment displays a success page, while a failed payment displays an error prompt. Its example image appears below step 4 with the Chinese caption ‘支付成功后页面提示’.
Open WeChat Pay's official exampleWhere to look after openingFind step 4, then the image captioned ‘支付成功后页面提示’. The publisher's example is a reference, not a promise that your current app layout will be identical.
Check the official payment flow and transaction record
Alipay's official help lists the payment-code flow as opening Pay/Collect, showing the code to the merchant and completing payment. To check the resulting transaction, use Me → Bills and open the detailed entry. The official help says More can show the Alipay transaction number and merchant order number.
Open Alipay's official payment-code stepsWhat this reference does—and does not—showUse it to verify the official completed-payment flow. It is not presented here as an equivalent success-page screenshot. Use the bill reference below for transaction evidence.
Only external links—not official images in Slow China. The WeChat example stays on the publisher's website: it is not copied, embedded or hotlinked here, and no reproduction permission is implied. Actual results and menu labels can vary by payment flow and app version; match the merchant, RMB amount, time and detailed transaction record.
Do not pay again. Go straight to symptom 7 and resolve the first transaction.
1. Can I register with my own foreign phone number?
Yes—official visitor guidance supports registering Alipay and WeChat with an international number. Use a number you will still control in China. Before departure, ask your carrier whether ordinary SMS works while roaming; a data-only travel eSIM does not replace SMS to your home number. For Weixin Pay card verification, the requested number may specifically be the one stored with your card issuer, not a new Chinese number.
- Keep the original SIM active for SMS if that is where your number lives; you can use another eSIM for mobile data.
- Do not wait until arrival to discover that your number cannot receive the code.
2. How do I verify my passport without getting stuck?
Open the identity-verification flow in each app and use the passport you will travel with. Place the photo page flat, include all four corners, avoid glare on the holographic film, and enter the name and document information exactly as the screen requests. Weixin Pay's official instructions also link card verification with the full name, identity details and phone number held by the issuer. Requirements can differ by account, so follow your screen rather than an old screenshot.
- If the image keeps failing, try even light and a matte dark surface to reduce reflections. This is a photography tip, not a guaranteed approval method.
- If verification says pending, read the displayed estimate and official recovery route; do not assume a universal 24-hour wait.
3. Where exactly do I add my international card?
In Alipay, go to Me → Bank Cards and follow Add Bank Card. In Weixin Pay, go to Me → Services → Wallet and follow the card prompts; menus may differ by version or region. Check the card number, expiry, name and security information yourself. A Visa or Mastercard logo is not proof that every card product, debit card, prepaid card or merchant scenario will work—the app and issuer decide.
- Where possible, prepare two eligible cards from different issuers rather than two cards from the same bank.
- Keep the physical cards with you; successful linking does not remove the need for a physical backup.
4. At a restaurant or shop, do I scan them or do they scan me?
Both are normal merchant-payment flows. To scan the merchant, open Scan in Alipay or WeChat, check the merchant name and enter or confirm the RMB amount. To present your code, open Pay/Collect in Alipay or Money/Payment Code in Weixin Pay, confirm the amount and let the cashier scan it. If a QR leads to a personal transfer rather than a merchant purchase, stop: foreign cards are not for transfers or red packets. Changing scan direction can be a legitimate alternative, not a universal fix.
- If you scan: allow camera access, frame the QR, wait for the checkout to identify the merchant, and enter the RMB amount only if the merchant's fixed amount does not appear. Read the amount back to the cashier before approving.
- If they scan: open your own payment-code page, keep the phone in your hand, let the cashier scan, then wait for a result. Do not send a payment-code screenshot or disclose your payment password.
- Before approving, read the merchant name, amount, funding card, currency and any fee. Never approve a request you do not understand.
- If the merchant cannot accept your card through that route, ask for a staffed cashier, physical-card terminal or cash payment.
5. How much can I pay, and what extra fees should I check?
Shanghai's government guidance, updated 24 July 2026, states a regulatory ceiling of US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 per year for visitors linking international cards to Alipay or Weixin Pay. Your app, account, card and issuer may set lower limits. Weixin Pay's current official rule waives its international-card fee at RMB 200 or below and states 3% above RMB 200, with proportional fee refunds on refunds. Check the confirmation page for your transaction, and separately check your issuer's exchange rate and foreign-transaction fee.
- For a large purchase, check available credit, same-day spending, pre-authorizations and currency conversion before reaching the till.
- Do not split an order to evade a limit. Ask the merchant for a legitimate alternative payment route.
6. How can I test this before an urgent purchase?
Finish registration, identity checks and card linking at home. If your own account offers a legitimate small payment, test that actual flow; never send money to a stranger just to test. Some mainland merchant checkouts cannot be reproduced abroad. On your first day, make a small, non-urgent purchase at a staffed merchant, then locate the transaction record while there is no pressure. Carry a physical card and RMB cash before depending on either wallet for transport or a meal.
- Save your payment apps' official help pages and your issuer's contact details offline.
- If a test fails, use the symptom guide below rather than repeatedly charging the same card.
Before I leave home: is my payment setup actually ready?
This is a practical departure checklist, not a test run by Slow China. Tick each item after you have checked it yourself. The purpose is to solve registration, verification and access problems while you still have time—not to promise that every future merchant transaction will succeed.
Only your ticks are saved in this browser. No account, card or payment data is collected.
Payment failed at the counter: what can I try now?
This is a decision sequence, not a magic formula. First make sure money has not already moved; then try only the branch that matches your situation.
- 01
Did the app or bank record the payment?
Open the app's detailed bill or transaction history and your own bank app. If you see success, a completed debit or a pending charge, do not start a second payment. Ask the merchant to check its receiving record and go to symptom 7. If there is no record, continue.
- 02
Is the page frozen, or is the connection failing?
If the screen spins or stays blank, switch between trusted mobile data and WiFi where available, reopen the app and ask the merchant to refresh a dynamic QR. A VPN or proxy can be recorded as part of the connection state, but it is not automatically the cause. If the same app now gives a specific error, follow that symptom below.
- 03
Is this a merchant payment or a personal transfer?
If the QR leads to a personal transfer or says foreign cards are unsupported, do not approve an unclear transfer. Ask whether the merchant has an official checkout or scanner that accepts your card. You may present your payment code, but success is not guaranteed. Otherwise use another app, a physical card or cash.
- 04
Does the message point to the card or bank?
Check your issuer's official app for a verification request, available funds and overseas or online payment permissions. Contact the issuer using the number on the card if the decline remains unexplained. A different issuer's card is usually a more useful next check than repeatedly submitting the same declined transaction.
- 05
Is it time to stop troubleshooting and use a backup?
If the app requests account review, identity verification or a security check, do not try to bypass it at the counter. Move to an independent payment method and contact official support when you have time. The aim is to finish the purchase safely, not to prove that one particular app must work.
What can this message actually mean?
This generic message cannot distinguish a connection problem, app check, merchant restriction, account control or issuer decline. VPN is only one possibility—not a proven default cause.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Open the wallet's own Bill or Transactions area, not just the home-screen notification. Look for this exact amount and time, then check your issuer's official app for a completed or pending debit. Save the exact error text. If neither record exists, note whether you used mobile data, WiFi, a VPN or a proxy; this helps support, but does not prove which one caused the failure.
- Check the app bill and issuer record before any retry.
- If no charge or pending transaction appears, reopen the app and make one controlled retry on a connection you trust.
- If it fails again, switch to the relevant symptom below or another payment method rather than repeating the same attempt.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Tell the cashier that your phone has not produced a clear result and ask them not to start another charge yet. If you were scanning a dynamic QR, ask for a fresh one only after checking for a record. If a second checkout is available, confirm that it belongs to the same merchant and displays the same amount.
If it still fails: your safe backupUse another app or eligible card, or ask to pay by physical card or cash.
What can this message actually mean?
The card, issuer, merchant or payment scenario may be ineligible. Foreign cards are for supported merchant purchases, not transfers. You cannot reliably identify every QR type from its appearance alone.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Before scanning again, read the page after the QR opens. Does it identify a merchant order, or is it asking you to send money to a named individual? Is your international card selectable, greyed out or missing? Those two observations are more useful than judging whether a printed QR ‘looks like’ a merchant code. Do not change to a balance, another person's account or a transfer to force the payment through.
- Confirm that you are paying a merchant for a purchase, not transferring money to an individual.
- Ask whether the merchant offers another official checkout that accepts your card. If they have a scanner, you can ask them to scan your in-app payment code—but this is not a universal workaround.
- If offered, check the merchant name and amount before approving. Never approve an unexplained transfer.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Ask: ‘Do you have a merchant checkout that accepts overseas cards?’ If staff offer to scan your payment code, open the wallet's own Pay/Collect or payment-code page and let the staff member scan it without sharing a password. If their equipment only supports another wallet or a physical card, follow that official route. A busy street stall may simply need cash.
If it still fails: your safe backupTry the other app or another eligible card, then a physical card or RMB cash.
What can this message actually mean?
Possible checks include available funds, overseas or online permissions, card-product eligibility, issuer security review, incorrect details or an expired card. Only the issuer can confirm many of these.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Open your issuer's app yourself. Check available credit or balance, card status, expiry, overseas and online-payment controls, and any transaction-verification alert. A bank may call a wallet purchase an online or third-party payment rather than ordinary contactless travel spending. If authentication is requested, complete it only in the bank's official app, SMS flow or verified website. Do not read a one-time code to a shop assistant or an unsolicited caller.
Work through these possible causes one by one
- Did the bank ask you to verify a transaction? Look in its official app, SMS and email. If it asks ‘was this you?’, confirm only when the merchant, amount and time match your purchase. Then check the result before trying once more.
- Does the card permit this type of payment? Ask specifically about overseas and online/third-party wallet transactions through Alipay or Weixin Pay—not just ‘travel in China.’ If your bank uses 3D Secure for this payment, complete its official verification; not every card or transaction uses the same flow.
- Do the details match? Check the card number, expiry, available funds and the exact name and phone number requested by the wallet. Weixin Pay says to use the issuer-held details for card verification. Do not invent or repeatedly alter a middle name; ask the issuer what its record contains.
- Is this card product accepted? Some debit, prepaid, business or soon-to-expire cards may be treated differently. Do not assume Visa or Mastercard means every card is accepted; ask the wallet and issuer about this specific product.
- A second wallet can be a useful controlled test only when the first transaction shows no charge. If the same card fails there too, contact the issuer; if it succeeds, save the differing screens for the wallet's support. One comparison does not prove a universal diagnosis.
- Check the card number, expiry, billing details and available funds in your own banking app.
- Look for an issuer verification request in the official banking app, SMS or email. Open these yourself; do not follow a link supplied by a stranger.
- Contact the issuer through the number on the card or its official app. Ask whether this exact merchant, app, amount and authentication method is permitted.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Ask the merchant to leave the order unpaid while you check the bank. Do not ask them to keep resubmitting the card. When you call the issuer, have the merchant name as displayed, RMB amount, local time and wallet name ready; ‘my card does not work in China’ is too vague to diagnose. If the bank confirms a block it cannot remove immediately, change funding source.
If it still fails: your safe backupA different issuer's card is more useful than repeating the same decline. Keep the physical card and cash available.
What can this message actually mean?
Several limits can apply at once: the payment service, your account, card product and issuer. The published regulatory ceiling does not override a lower account or bank limit.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Read the whole message: does it name a single-transaction, daily, monthly or annual ceiling, and is that ceiling imposed by the wallet or the bank? In the wallet, inspect the selected card and any limit/help link on the confirmation page. In your bank app, subtract pending holds and today's other spending from available funds. For a hotel or rental, distinguish a deposit or pre-authorization from the final charge.
- Read which limit is named and check the current in-app or issuer limit page.
- Include currency conversion, fees, pre-authorizations and other same-day spending when checking available headroom.
- Ask the merchant for another legitimate payment method. Do not split an order to evade a control or without the merchant issuing proper separate orders.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Ask whether the displayed figure is the final RMB price, a deposit or an authorization, and whether another official funding method is available. A merchant may be able to issue legitimate separate orders for genuinely separate purchases, but do not request artificial splitting to evade a limit. For a high-value purchase, resolve the issuer's limit before committing rather than relying on cash as an automatic fallback.
If it still fails: your safe backupUse another eligible funding method or a physical card; do not assume cash is practical for every large purchase.
What can this message actually mean?
The app may be checking account, device, network or transaction risk. The message does not establish that a VPN caused it, and there is no universal ten-second fix.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Take a screenshot of the complete warning and read whether it offers Verify, Appeal, Help or a waiting period. Check for a genuine app update through your device's official app store. If you are on a login-captive or unfamiliar WiFi network, switch to a connection you trust. Record whether a VPN or proxy was on; changing it is a connection check, not a promise to defeat a security control. Never install a ‘clean’ profile or modified wallet suggested by an unofficial helper.
- Stop repeated attempts and check the transaction record. Follow any official verification shown in the app.
- Move from an unfamiliar captive WiFi to a trusted mobile connection if available. Reopen the app and check for legitimate updates.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, record its state. If your connection checks suggest interference, disconnect it through its normal control before one retry; restoration of access is not guaranteed.
- If the warning persists, use the app's official support channel rather than attempting to evade its security controls.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Do not ask staff to try different amounts, cards or QR codes to see which one slips through. Explain that your app requires a security check and request a normal alternative: the other wallet with an eligible card, a physical card accepted by that merchant, or cash. Complete the account review later in a quiet place.
If it still fails: your safe backupPause this app and use a separate, legitimate payment route while the account is reviewed.
What can this message actually mean?
Connectivity, an expired QR, an app process or a pending transaction can produce an ambiguous screen. Do not assume a frozen page means no payment.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
First look for a transaction identifier, Processing, Success or Failed beneath the spinning page. Pull up the wallet bill and bank record; a frozen interface does not prove that no request reached the provider. If there is no record, reopen the app, switch between trusted mobile data and WiFi, and confirm that mobile data is enabled for the wallet. Avoid repeated airplane-mode toggling once a payment may be pending.
- Wait for a clear status, then check the bill and issuer record before generating another order.
- If there is no record, switch between trusted mobile data and WiFi where available, reopen the app and ask the merchant to refresh a dynamic QR.
- If the transaction remains pending, keep the record and ask the app or issuer how to proceed instead of paying again.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Ask whether the merchant's terminal shows Waiting, Paid, Cancelled or no order. A QR that was generated for one order may expire; have staff refresh it through their own checkout, not by sending you a picture in a personal chat. Keep the original amount unchanged. If the merchant already has a pending order, let its support or cashier resolve that order first.
If it still fails: your safe backupOnly choose another method after you have established that the original payment did not succeed or is safely resolved.
What can this message actually mean?
There may be a confirmation delay, a different merchant account, an order mismatch or another processing issue. A screenshot alone is not a substitute for the merchant checking its own system.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Open the detailed bill entry and find the status, merchant name, amount, timestamp and transaction or order reference. Keep this page available rather than relying only on a cropped screenshot. Check whether the bank says Pending, Posted or Reversed. A familiar shop brand can appear under a different legal merchant name, so compare the reference and amount with staff instead of assuming either side is wrong.
- Do not pay again. Open the detailed transaction record, not just a phone notification.
- Ask the merchant to check the exact time, amount and transaction reference in its own receiving system and refresh its notification.
- Keep the order, receipt and transaction details. If the merchant cannot locate a completed payment, contact the payment app; contact the issuer as well if its record differs.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Ask the cashier to refresh the receiving account and search by amount and time, then involve a supervisor if the order is not visible. Show the reference without revealing a password or full card number. Request a written note or receipt documenting the disputed order if you must leave. Do not buy the same item again ‘to make the receipt appear’ while the first debit is unresolved.
If it still fails: your safe backupDo not use a second payment to solve a record dispute. Resolve or formally cancel the first transaction with the merchant and payment provider.
What can this message actually mean?
The lockout and its duration depend on the account and the exact control. There is no verified universal 24-hour release or guaranteed response time.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Read the restriction page all the way through. Does it name a feature, a deadline, an identity check or an appeal link? Save the wording and any case number. Use the wallet's official help or verification route only. Do not create a fresh account with a different identity, buy an ‘unlock,’ or send passport images through a stranger's chat account. If support asks for evidence, provide the minimum requested through its verified channel.
- Stop attempts. Read the exact restriction, any displayed review time and the official recovery route.
- Use only the app's own identity or appeal process. Never pay an unofficial ‘unlocking service’ or send passport images to a stranger.
- Contact official support with the screenshot, time and transaction record; do not create multiple accounts to bypass a restriction.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Do not make the cashier wait through an account appeal. Ask to hold or cancel the unpaid order according to the shop's normal process and switch to an independent method. If a card is declined inside both wallets, that still does not establish a wallet lock; check the issuer branch as well. No merchant can legitimately remove the wallet's security restriction for you.
If it still fails: your safe backupUse an independent app, card or cash while the original account is unavailable.
What can this message actually mean?
Glare, blur, cropped corners, an unsupported document, damaged MRZ or mismatched personal details can interfere. Repeated rejection may require an account-specific review.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Use the document type requested by your own app, normally the passport you will carry. Photograph the photo page in even, indirect light with all four corners visible and no fingers over the MRZ. Try a matte dark surface only to reduce glare—not in a dark room that makes the text unreadable. Compare the spelling, order and spaces requested on the form with the passport; do not experiment with false variations. Check whether the app offers an alternative supported document or manual review.
- Use the requested passport photo page, good even light, a steady camera and all four corners visible. Avoid glare on the holographic film.
- Enter the name and document details exactly as the app requests. Do not invent a different spelling to force a match.
- A matte dark surface can reduce glare as a photography technique; this is a practical suggestion, not an official success-rate claim.
- If valid attempts still fail, contact official support. Do not keep changing documents or send copies to unofficial helpers.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
This is normally a pre-departure account task, not something a cashier can fix. If it happens during an in-store setup, stop the registration attempt and use an already verified method. Do not hand your unlocked passport to a shop assistant or let an unofficial ‘agent’ photograph it. Ask staff only for an ordinary physical-card or cash checkout.
If it still fails: your safe backupComplete identity checks before departure. Until verified, rely on methods that do not require the blocked account.
What can this message actually mean?
Review requirements and timing can vary. A fixed 24-hour completion promise is not supported by the official instructions reviewed here.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Reopen the verification page through the app, not through a link in an unsolicited message. Check whether it says Submitted, Needs more information or Approved, and whether a review estimate or case reference is displayed. Upload more material only when the official flow requests it. Save the submission time so support can identify the application. Do not submit repeated applications merely because no immediate email arrives.
- Read the displayed estimate and whether the app needs more information. Save the submission reference if supplied.
- Do not submit duplicate applications unless the official flow asks you to. Contact support if the stated review window has passed.
- Move payment-critical tasks away from this account until verification is complete.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
A merchant cannot accelerate identity review. If the purchase is urgent, move to a verified wallet, an eligible physical card or cash. If the item requires实名 registration through the same blocked service, ask whether an official staffed counter has another compliant process; do not borrow another person's verified identity.
If it still fails: your safe backupUse your physical card, another fully verified app or cash; do not make an urgent purchase depend on approval arriving today.
What can this message actually mean?
The registered number, roaming SMS, signal, sender filtering, issuer records or request frequency may be involved. A data eSIM alone does not provide ordinary SMS to your home number.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Check the country code and every digit on the verification screen. Confirm which line is active if you use dual SIM or eSIM: travel data can work while the home line's roaming SMS is off. Look in blocked, spam and filtered messages. For card linking, verify which number your issuer holds; changing the wallet login number does not update the bank's record. Pause before requesting another code and never share the code with anyone offering to register for you.
- Confirm the full country code and number. For Weixin Pay card verification, use the phone number held by the card issuer when requested.
- Check roaming SMS with your carrier and inspect filtered or spam messages. Keep the physical SIM active if that is where the number lives.
- Wait before requesting another code. Use email only if the official screen actually offers it; do not assume it is an alternative.
- If codes still fail, contact the carrier and the app or issuer through official channels.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Do not ask a cashier or a new local contact to receive the code on their phone. That would tie a security step to someone else's number. Ask to pay with an already configured wallet, physical card or cash, and resolve roaming with your carrier or issuer later. If a merchant's own mini program requires a Chinese number, use its staffed alternative instead of trying arbitrary numbers.
If it still fails: your safe backupUse a previously verified method rather than relying on a brand-new account at the cashier.
What can this message actually mean?
The mini program can have account, phone, card and merchant rules separate from the wallet app. Wallet activation does not guarantee every mini program will work.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Identify exactly where the mini program stops: international phone format, passport field, delivery address, card selection or final payment. Read whether it offers an English page, email registration, an official website or an on-site pickup option. The same merchant can have a wallet payment terminal that works even when its mini program checkout does not. Do not enter a fake Chinese phone number or someone else's passport details just to reach the next screen.
- Look for the merchant's official alternative: staffed cashier, ticket counter, paper menu or another official checkout.
- Ask staff to enter the order manually and offer an eligible physical card or cash where accepted.
- For a hotel-assisted request, agree the exact item, price and reimbursement before anyone pays. Slow China does not make the booking for you.
- Use a third-party seller only after checking its official terms, passport requirements, refund conditions and final price; it is not a guaranteed bypass.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
Show staff the exact screen and ask for a paper menu, staffed order, ticket window or ordinary cashier. Have them confirm the item, quantity, RMB total and collection arrangements before paying. If a hotel helps, agree what it will book and how you will reimburse it. If you independently choose a third-party seller, check the seller's official passport, refund and final-price terms; Slow China does not place that order.
If it still fails: your safe backupLeave the mini program and move to an official human or on-site payment path.
What can this message actually mean?
Acceptance depends on the city, line, gate, card network, issuer settings and available funds. Do not generalize one city's rule to another, or a service-center POS to gate entry.
What should I check and tap on my phone?
Move aside before troubleshooting. Check the bank app for an entry authorization, fare, reversal or decline, and make sure the card's contactless and overseas functions are enabled if your issuer provides those controls. Do not assume a previous tap was free because no final fare is visible yet. City acceptance can differ by line and gate; consult the current local transit instruction rather than a nationwide checklist.
- Step out of the gate flow and go to the staffed service center. Never tailgate another passenger or force the gate.
- If you may already have an entry record, tell staff before buying another ticket so they can resolve the journey record.
- Ask which currently supported ticket or city-specific transit QR applies. Card acceptance at a service-center POS does not prove the same card works at every gate.
- For card-gate acceptance, confirm current city guidance and your issuer's contactless and overseas rules rather than relying on a generic checklist.
What should I ask the merchant or staff?
At the service center, say whether you were entering or exiting and show the same card or device credential you used. Ask staff to inspect the journey record before buying another ticket. If a different gate supports the card, follow staff directions; otherwise request a single-journey ticket or the currently supported local transit QR. Never tailgate, force a gate or tap repeatedly while staff investigate.
If it still fails: your safe backupBuy a single-journey ticket or use a locally supported transit code after staff resolves any existing journey record.
A second app and a second issuer
Keep both apps configured and, where possible, cards from different issuers. This helps isolate a card-specific problem but never guarantees merchant acceptance.
A physical card at a merchant that accepts it
Look for the relevant card-network mark or ask the cashier. Acceptance is not universal, especially at small businesses. If you have an eligible UnionPay card issued outside mainland China, it can use a participating UnionPay terminal—but only the merchant and issuer can confirm the transaction. Ask about any deposit or pre-authorization before handing over the card.
RMB cash, in useful denominations
Carry a modest emergency amount based on your budget rather than a universal prescribed sum. Withdraw from an ATM displaying your card's network and check both ATM and issuer fees and limits. Current cash rules protect ordinary cash payment in face-to-face settings, with specific provisions for unattended and fully online services.
A person you trust—not an informal money workaround
A travel companion can pay an ordinary merchant order and you can reimburse them under your own card and cash rules. A hotel may help communicate or arrange an official ticket counter. Agree the exact purchase and settlement first. Do not buy account balances, borrow identities or pay an unknown person to unlock an account.
ATM and currency-choice checks
- Use an ATM displaying a network supported by your card; check the machine's fee disclosure before accepting.
- Your issuer may apply its own overseas withdrawal limit, cash-advance or foreign-transaction charges. Check before departure.
- If offered a choice of billing currency, read the rate and fees. Choosing your home currency is not automatically cheaper; compare the disclosed conversion with your issuer's terms.
- If the ATM retains your card or money leaves your account without cash, keep the receipt and contact the ATM operator and issuer promptly.

Not for the basic visitor setup described here: official guidance supports linking eligible international cards to Alipay and Weixin Pay. That does not make every account, transfer, merchant or mini program eligible.
Can I rely on Apple Pay or Google Pay?
Do not assume that a card stored in a phone wallet will work everywhere the physical card works. Acceptance depends on the merchant, network, device credential and specific service. Keep the physical card and another payment route.
Can a business refuse RMB cash?
The RMB Cash Acceptance and Service Provisions effective 1 February 2026 generally prohibit refusing cash or discriminating against cash payment, and require support in ordinary staffed and face-to-face transactions. They also address unattended machines and fully online services separately. Carry smaller notes; authenticity questions and impractically large quantities of small change can require a practical resolution rather than an argument at the till.
Why did a wallet work in Hong Kong or Macao but not on the mainland?
Treat wallet versions, card eligibility, merchant coverage and identity checks in Hong Kong, China, Macao, China and the Chinese mainland as separate checks. A previous success does not prove that the same route is enabled across regions.
Could a failed payment still charge me?
Yes, an unclear screen is not enough to establish that no money moved. Open the wallet's detailed bill and your issuer's official record. Look for Pending, Processing, Success, Reversed or Failed rather than relying on a push notification. If a debit exists, do not create a second order: ask the merchant to locate the first one and contact the wallet or issuer with the reference. A pending authorization is not always the final posted charge, so ask how the provider will resolve it.
Is VPN really the cause of most payment failures?
There is no reliable basis here for a claim such as ‘80% have three causes’ or ‘turning off VPN fixes 70%.’ A VPN, proxy or captive WiFi can be relevant connection information, but the same generic failure can also involve the card, issuer, merchant, account or app. Check for a transaction record, read the exact message, and change only the relevant branch. Never treat a connection change as a way to bypass an account security check.
What fee should I expect?
Weixin Pay's rule published 28 November 2025 says international-card transactions up to and including RMB 200 are exempt from its international-card fee; above RMB 200 it states 3%, with proportional fee refunds when a transaction is refunded. It also says eligible cards and scenarios follow the service page. For Alipay and your issuer, read the current confirmation and account terms; fees can be separate.
Can I follow an old TourPass or wallet tutorial?
Do not make an old product name or screenshot your plan. Install the current official app and follow the route presented to your account. The official sources in this guide describe direct international-card linking; they do not establish that every legacy tutorial remains available.
Keep the right evidence, contact the right party
Alipay
Use the app's official help route. Its official overseas contact page lists +86 571 95188 and notes that carrier charges may apply. No universal English response time is promised here.
Weixin Pay / Tenpay
Use the app's official help route. Tenpay's international-card rule lists 95017 for questions. Card eligibility and service scenarios still follow the page shown to your account.
Your card issuer
Use the number on the card or the issuer's official app. Provide the merchant, app, amount, time, currency and exact decline message. Ask whether a record is pending, posted, reversed or declined.
A consumer complaint—not an instant payment fix
For a genuine unresolved merchant-service or consumer-rights dispute in China, 12315 is the official consumer complaint channel; 12345 is a government service hotline whose language support varies locally. Use the merchant, platform and payment provider first for an urgent transaction. Neither hotline is a card-unlocking service or a promise of immediate English support.
The merchant or station staff
Ask them to check their own order or journey record. Keep the receipt, transaction reference, screenshots and a note of who you spoke to. Never share your full card number, password or passport through an unofficial chat account.
Official rules and where to get help
Use the official links below to recheck payment setup, cash acceptance, transaction records and support channels. Sources were checked on 30 October 2026 for the scope named beside each link. They open the original publisher's website in a new tab; they are references, not bookings, endorsements or paid placements. Your app's current screen and your issuer still determine your transaction.
Coverage and limits: this guide summarizes the cited official rules and provides practical steps for common payment problems. It does not establish success rates, guaranteed processing times or universal account eligibility. It is not a record of personal testing of every payment method; follow your own app, issuer and merchant when their current instructions differ.
