Start with the connection you actually have.
Choose a connection, save your provider's instructions and diagnose the exact symptom before changing settings or deleting a plan. A working internet connection does not prove that every app, account or payment will work.
- What was checked
- The cited official device, connectivity and support instructions, including eSIM, WiFi, APN, hotspot and app-specific checks.
- Known limits
- Menus and outcomes vary by device, operating-system version, provider, plan and account. Network routes, roaming charges and service availability are not tested or guaranteed for your device. Check the provider before deleting an eSIM, changing APN or enabling hotspot roaming.
A travel eSIM
Install it only after checking that your phone is compatible and carrier-unlocked. Keep the provider's activation window, APN, roaming and hotspot instructions. Some plans activate on installation; others on arrival.
Roaming with your home carrier
Ask your home carrier whether mainland China is included, what the daily or data charges are, and whether receiving SMS abroad costs extra. Select this line for data only if you have deliberately chosen its roaming plan.
A local SIM or eSIM
Ask the staffed carrier counter to activate the exact plan, explain its data allowance and test a webpage before you leave. Bring the identification the carrier requires. Device and eSIM support vary by model and region.
WiFi, with a sign-in plan
A WiFi icon means the device joined that local network, not necessarily that the internet is ready. A browser sign-in page, room details or SMS verification may still be required. Ask staff for the current official process.
WiFi can quietly change the result.
Before comparing mobile data with WiFi, make sure you know which one is active. A travel-eSIM brand alone does not tell you which route your traffic uses or whether a particular service will work.
Check the phone before buying a plan
Confirm eSIM support and carrier unlock. On iPhone, Settings → General → About shows Carrier Lock; ‘No SIM restrictions’ means it is unlocked. On Android, use the manufacturer's instructions for your model.
Save the provider instructions—not a generic APN
Keep the order email, activation QR or reference, APN instructions and support contact available offline. Do not delete an eSIM as a first troubleshooting step; reinstallation rights differ by provider.
Install essential apps and offline information
Before departure, install the apps you actually need for payments, messaging, maps, translation and transport. Save the hotel's Chinese name and address, booking details, essential tickets and offline translation resources where the app supports them.
Separate your home number from your travel data
If you need home-number SMS, keep that line available and ask the carrier about roaming. Set the intended travel line as Cellular Data, and review home-line data roaming before activating anything. Dual-line menus differ by device.
Prepare account and secure-connection support
Save official account-recovery routes. If your employer or service provider supplies an approved secure-connection tool, install its official version and retain its support instructions. This guide does not provide instructions for bypassing network controls.
Agree on a human fallback
Give a travel companion or family member two ways to reach you. Keep the hotel phone number and a printed address. A charged phone, offline details and a staffed counter can keep the trip moving without promising any particular app will work.

What should I do in the first ten minutes?
- 01
Identify the line and network you are using
Turn on the travel line according to its activation instructions and select it for cellular data. If testing mobile data, temporarily disconnect from hotel WiFi so the result is unambiguous.

Apply roaming only to the intended line
Travel eSIMs and home-carrier roaming have different requirements and prices. Follow the exact provider instruction; do not enable roaming blindly on both lines. Recheck the home line's charges before using it.

Test two independent tasks
Open a website you know and refresh it, then open one essential app such as your map or wallet. One failed website or one failed app cannot identify the whole network's condition.
- 04
Check the result before assuming a payment failed
If a wallet spins or loses connection, check its bill and the merchant's order before another payment. Connection recovery does not resolve a transaction that is already pending or completed.
What should I establish first?
Start with the line, plan and coverage—not the APN. A home carrier, travel-eSIM provider and local carrier have different accounts and supported partner networks. Do not infer that one named Chinese carrier is universally best.
A safe order of checks
- Confirm the intended eSIM/SIM line is installed, turned on and activated for the correct destination and dates. If the line is missing, contact the provider rather than guessing settings.
- On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular and check Turn On This Line. Toggle Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, then off; restart the phone if needed.
- On WiFi, check official system and carrier-settings updates. Ask the provider about account status, local coverage and the supported network-selection instructions for your plan.
- Do not delete the eSIM or reset all network settings as an early experiment. Save the error and ask the provider whether reinstallation or a reset is supported.
What should I establish first?
Signal only shows a cellular radio connection. The selected data line may be wrong, the plan may be inactive or exhausted, or the provider may require its own APN and roaming configuration.
A safe order of checks
- Turn off WiFi temporarily, select the intended line for cellular data, and check the provider app or order for activation and remaining allowance.
- Follow the provider's data-roaming instruction for that line. Check that your home line will not silently take over data or roaming charges.
- Compare APN fields with the provider's current instructions only. On iPhone, APN editing is available only when the carrier allows it; incorrect values can remove data service or add charges.
- If everything matches, send the provider the exact error, location, device model, plan name and a screenshot. Do not repeatedly buy another plan before resolving the first one's status.
What should I establish first?
Coverage, a local outage, automatic network selection, a plan restriction or a device setting can produce similar symptoms. A single drop does not establish the cause.
A safe order of checks
- Note whether the problem follows you to another location and whether it occurs on WiFi, mobile data or both. This narrows the useful support question.
- If two lines are enabled, check which one is selected for data and whether your device allows cellular-data switching. Avoid changing several settings at once.
- Use the provider's supported network-selection instructions if supplied. There is no verified universal carrier ranking or fixed manual-selection cure.
- Contact the provider with timestamps and location. If urgent, switch to an already tested alternative connection rather than repeatedly resetting the device.
What should I establish first?
Congestion, weak coverage, background downloads, hotspot use, data-saving settings or fair-use limits can all slow a connection. Do not assume a fixed evening peak, a daily speed reset or a predicted ‘good hour’ applies to your plan.
A safe order of checks
- Compare the same simple task on your tested mobile-data connection and the venue's WiFi. Stop large background downloads before judging the result.
- Move to a better-covered location if practical. Check the plan's remaining allowance, speed restrictions and hotspot terms in the provider's own account page.
- Do not change DNS, APN or network mode using random values. A different setting can break the connection or introduce charges.
- For an important call, download needed material in advance and keep a low-bandwidth or offline option rather than relying on a predicted ‘good hour’.
What should I establish first?
A hotspot uses the phone's supported data service. Some providers restrict tethering or charge extra, and the connected laptop may still be using a different saved network.
A safe order of checks
- Confirm the phone itself has working mobile data and that the selected data line is the plan you intend to pay for.
- iPhone: Settings → Personal Hotspot (or Cellular → Personal Hotspot) → Allow Others to Join. Android: use the Hotspot control or your manufacturer's hotspot menu.
- On the other device, explicitly select the phone's hotspot name and enter its current password. Keep a strong password and turn off sharing when finished.
- If unavailable, check software updates and restart both devices. Ask the carrier whether the plan includes tethering; watch battery and data consumption.
What should I establish first?
The venue may require a captive-portal sign-in, room details, acceptance of terms or a verification code. Its current process—not a generic hotel rule—determines what is needed.
A safe order of checks
- Confirm the exact network name with staff. Open the device's WiFi settings and look for a Sign in or notification prompt.
- Open a normal browser tab and reload a known page. Do not disable browsing security or accept an unexpected certificate warning to force a redirect.
- If the page is stuck, follow the device instructions to reconnect or forget this specific saved network, then ask staff for the current login method.
- If SMS verification is required, check which countries and number formats the venue supports. If your number cannot receive it, ask for a staffed alternative instead of borrowing someone else's code.
What should I establish first?
Availability can depend on the current network path, local rules, the provider and the individual account. A successful search page or map load does not guarantee every service will work.
A safe order of checks
- Write down which connection is active: travel eSIM, home roaming, local cellular service or venue WiFi. Do not assume a plan's brand name tells you its route.
- Test another known website and one essential local travel task. If those work, preserve the failing app's exact error and time.
- Check the service's official status and support information where available. Update only through the official app store and review the app's own account notices.
- For an urgent travel task, use an available official alternative or a staffed counter. Do not treat repeated retries or random configuration changes as a solution.
What should I establish first?
The plan may be active but use a different route, restrict certain traffic, have a provisioning issue, or be affected by the app or account. ‘Travel eSIM’ alone cannot diagnose the failure.
A safe order of checks
- Temporarily disconnect WiFi and confirm the eSIM is the selected cellular-data line. Otherwise you may still be testing the venue's network.
- Read the provider's current plan documentation for destination coverage, routing disclosures, restrictions and support. Do not rely on an advertisement promising every app.
- Test a different essential app and save the exact failure. If basic data works but one service fails, escalate that distinction to the provider or app support.
- Use an independently tested connection or an offline/human alternative when needed. Buying several untested eSIMs at once does not guarantee a backup.
What should I establish first?
The service, network path, account session or app configuration may be involved. A ‘connected’ badge alone is not an end-to-end connectivity test, and there is no universal server or protocol recommendation.
A safe order of checks
- Record the app, account status, network type and exact error. Check whether ordinary local travel tasks work independently of this tool.
- Use the official provider's current troubleshooting and support channel. Do not install configuration profiles, modified apps or certificates supplied by strangers.
- Compare the same ordinary task on a trusted alternative connection if you already have one. This helps identify the affected path without promising a fix.
- For employer-provided access, contact your organization's IT administrator and follow its approved policy. Keep urgent travel tasks on available official channels.
What should I establish first?
You do not need to establish one perfect diagnosis before reaching the hotel, contacting a companion or resolving a payment. Use the most independent backup already available to you.
A safe order of checks
- Open saved hotel, ticket and address information offline. Keep the screen available for a taxi driver or staff member.
- Switch only to a connection you have already identified and priced: another tested data plan or the venue's official WiFi. Do not improvise unknown paid roaming.
- Ask the hotel, carrier counter, transport staff or merchant for a normal assisted channel. A telephone call may work when mobile data does not, depending on your line and plan.
- For payment, check existing transactions before retrying. Use an already configured independent method or cash where accepted; never let urgency cause a duplicate charge.
What if only this app is failing?
WeChat: registration or verification stalls
Check the number format, country code, line enabled for SMS and the exact in-app request. Use the official Help Center. Network changes do not guarantee approval, and a stranger should not complete identity verification for you.
Alipay: the app opens, but payment keeps spinning
Treat this as a possible transaction-state problem, not only a network problem. Check the wallet bill and merchant order before another attempt, then use the linked payment guide.
Messaging apps: messages remain unsent
Check the connection, recipient and app status. Save the important text before changing networks or reinstalling; delivery and retention behavior are app-specific, so do not assume queued messages can never be lost.
Email: your usual inbox is unavailable
Use the provider's official web or app support and your prearranged alternative contact. Set up any forwarding before departure only if you understand and accept its privacy implications; do not promise it will deliver every existing message.
Social media: text or images do not load
Record whether the whole app or only media fails and compare another network you already trust. Avoid repeated uploads of important originals; keep a local copy and check the service's official support.
Video or short-video apps: access differs by plan or region
Do not infer that an eSIM makes every media service available. Provider, app, account, licensing and regional rules can each matter. Use official support for the specific service.
Maps: the app opens, but the place or route looks wrong
Search the exact Chinese name and address, compare the pin with the booking's official location and ask the venue or driver to confirm. Availability and map-data accuracy are separate questions.
App stores: a new download or update fails
Check storage, account status, device compatibility and the current connection through the official store's support. Install essential apps before departure; do not use an unofficial modified installer as a shortcut.
Payment or transit mini programs: only one task fails
Identify the exact stopping point: phone format, identity field, location permission, payment or the final confirmation. Ask the merchant or transit staff for the ordinary staffed alternative rather than entering false details.
The address without the internet
Keep the hotel's Chinese name, full address and phone number offline, with a screenshot and a paper copy. Save critical booking references separately from the app that may be unavailable.
A second connection you understand
A backup is useful only when its activation, coverage and price are known. Test it before you urgently need it; do not assume two plans using the same underlying service are independent.
A person at a real counter
Show the exact error and your offline address or booking. Ask for the official assisted process at the hotel, carrier, station or merchant. Slow China does not place bookings or take over accounts for you.
The transaction before the retry
A frozen screen is not proof that a payment never reached the provider. Check the app bill, bank record and merchant order first; keep the amount and reference unchanged.
Check the wallet bill and merchant order before trying again. Open the payment-loading answer.
Payment and connection problems need separate checks.
Open the complete payment guideDoes a travel eSIM guarantee access to every app?
No. Device compatibility, activation, coverage, plan restrictions, network routing, the app and your account can all affect the result. Verify the provider's written plan details and keep an alternative for essential tasks.
Why did things change when I joined hotel WiFi?
You changed the active network path. Turn off WiFi temporarily and confirm which line supplies cellular data before comparing results. A change in one app's behavior still does not prove a universal routing rule.
Should I delete and reinstall the eSIM?
Not as an early troubleshooting step. Providers differ on whether a QR code or profile can be reused. Save the error and ask the provider first. APN changes also require the provider's exact values.
What does this guide say about network rules?
The publicly available Chinese regulation is linked for reference. Rules and their application can change; for a specific situation, consult the relevant authority or a qualified legal professional. This guide does not assess individual enforcement risk or provide individualized legal advice.
When should I stop troubleshooting?
When a travel task is urgent, when a transaction might be pending, or when the next step would delete a plan, reset settings or create unknown charges. Preserve the evidence and switch to an official support or human fallback.
Bring the provider a useful diagnostic record.
Include the plan name, device model, country and city, active line, network type, exact error, timestamps and what you already changed. Do not post passwords, full passport images or one-time codes in public or to unverified helpers.
