The cheapest fare is not always the cheapest arrival.
Decide the entry path, airport, first night and connection conditions before comparing an attractive fare. An open-jaw route is a planning option, not a guarantee of a lower total cost or permission to enter.
- What was checked
- The cited official entry, airport and travel-document checks relevant to airport choice, connections and Hong Kong or Macao segments.
- Known limits
- Flight schedules, terminals, fares, baggage agreements and border permission depend on the actual ticket, carrier, route and documents. No live fares or guaranteed best-booking window are provided.
Entry permission before fare
Identify the visa or exemption path, eligible ports and permitted areas before treating the cheapest airport as usable.
The shape of the whole trip
List the cities in order and decide whether returning to the arrival city adds an unnecessary journey.
Arrival time and first night
Account for immigration, baggage, airport-to-hotel time, late transport and fatigue—not just scheduled landing time.
The real ticket conditions
Check baggage, change/refund terms, operating carrier, terminal and whether separate tickets create new entry or transfer requirements.
One usable fallback
Save the airport's official information, hotel address and a staffed transport option if the app or train is unavailable.
Capital or Daxing: read the airport code
Both are Beijing-area international gateways, but they are different airports. Confirm which airport and terminal each flight uses, especially if a domestic connection, hotel transfer or departure is involved. Do not schedule a casual cross-airport transfer without the full journey time and carrier instructions.
Pudong or Hongqiao: verify the actual flight
Do not treat ‘Shanghai’ as one arrival point. Check PVG or SHA, the terminal, the operating flight and the final hotel transfer. Hongqiao may be convenient for some rail or city connections, but suitability depends on the actual route and timetable rather than a universal airport ranking.
Tianfu or Shuangliu: plan the last mile
Confirm which airport your operating carrier uses and how you will reach the hotel at the actual arrival hour. If Chengdu is the first stop on a transit exemption, also check every side trip against Sichuan's current city-level permitted-area list.
Jiangbei: connect the airport to the actual district
Chongqing's terrain and large urban area make the final neighborhood and arrival time important. Verify the airline's current terminal and a realistic hotel route. If combining Chengdu and Chongqing, compare the whole rail-or-flight journey, including both stations or airports and waiting time.
Arrive in one city, depart from another
Search multi-city as well as round-trip. Compare the full fare and conditions with the cost and time of returning to the first city; open-jaw is an option, not a guaranteed cheaper ticket.
Put the geography in order
Examples such as Shanghai in / Beijing out or the reverse can avoid backtracking for some itineraries. Test the actual rail, flight, baggage and hotel sequence before committing.
Keep entry rules attached to the route
An open-jaw route does not itself create eligibility. Confirm the entry and exit ports, onward destination, permitted areas and visa entries for the chosen path.
Do not add Hong Kong or Macao casually
Leaving the mainland for Hong Kong, China or Macao, China is a separate border movement. A single-entry mainland visa may no longer permit a return; check all three legs before booking.
Compare the complete journey, not a fare headline.
Include the return ground journey, extra hotel night, baggage, station or airport transfer, change conditions and the time lost to backtracking. Slow China does not sell flights or display live fares.
One ticket or separate tickets?
Ask every operating carrier whether bags are checked through and whether you must collect them, clear entry formalities or check in again. Do not infer through-baggage from an itinerary displayed on one screen.
Same airport and terminal?
Check airport codes and terminals. An airport change is a landside journey that can require local entry permission, extra time and a new security or baggage process.
Does the transit point require a visa?
Requirements depend on nationality, route, airport, sterile-transit facilities and whether you leave the transit area. Verify the transit country's official rules and the carrier's document check.
What is the minimum realistic connection?
Use the airport and carrier's current guidance, then add your own needs: immigration, baggage, mobility, language, children and separate-ticket risk. No universal two-hour rule is safe for every route.
What happens after a delay?
Know who rebooks you under the ticket conditions, where to ask and what essentials are in cabin baggage. Separate tickets can leave the traveler responsible for a missed onward service.
Is the next flight actually operating?
Check the operating carrier, terminal and current notice directly before departure. A codeshare marketing name alone does not tell you the counter or aircraft operator.
Hong Kong, China → mainland China
Check permission to enter Hong Kong, the exact rail, road, sea or air border crossing, baggage and ticket arrangements, and permission to enter the mainland. If using 240-hour transit, verify the chosen port and next third country or region on the current NIA list.
A high-speed rail journey or short distance does not remove border formalities. Verify current station and transport operating details directly.
Macao, China → mainland China
Check entry to Macao, the selected border crossing and the mainland entry permission separately. If the mainland itinerary resumes afterward, do not assume a single-entry visa or a previous temporary entry remains available.
Placing Hong Kong or Macao at the beginning or end can simplify some routes, but it does not replace checking the exact documents for each segment.
Do not assume mainland → Hong Kong → mainland works on one entry.
Leaving the mainland can consume the entry used. Check your visa entries or the applicable exemption and obtain a current official answer before buying that middle segment.
Should I always buy an open-jaw ticket?
No. Compare it with round-trip and separate tickets using the whole itinerary, fare conditions and ground transport. Choose the shape that avoids unnecessary backtracking without creating document or transfer problems.
Is a direct flight into Beijing or Shanghai always better?
Not universally. A hub may offer more schedule and support options, but the best arrival depends on the actual itinerary, arrival time, fare conditions and transfer to the hotel. This guide makes no route-count or airport-quality ranking.
Can I assume my luggage goes to the final destination?
No. Obtain confirmation for every operating segment and ticket. Collection and recheck may be required at an entry point, airport change or separate-ticket connection.
When is the cheapest time to book?
There is no verified universal weekday, advance-purchase window or airline member day in this guide. Compare live flexible-date fares, baggage and change conditions and use the airline's current official offer rather than a fixed saving percentage.

These are outbound references to official channels, not live eligibility, fare or account-availability guarantees. Policies, apps and menus change; recheck for the actual route before departure.
Coverage: entry-port decisions, airport trade-offs, open-jaw routes, transit documents, baggage, terminal changes and Hong Kong/Macao connections. Live fares, route rankings and sales-day promises are not provided; verify the actual ticket and operator.
Visa-Free Transit Policies
57 eligible nationalities, 65 ports, permitted areas, confirmed onward ticket and activity conditions.
IATA Travel Centre
A document-check aid for the complete route, not a replacement for government, immigration, consular or airline decisions.
Official airport flight and passenger information
Verify the actual Beijing airport, terminal and airline instructions. PEK and PKX are separate airports; do not infer a cross-airport connection.
Official Shanghai airport passenger information
Verify whether a ticket uses Pudong (PVG) or Hongqiao (SHA), its terminal and ground transport before arrival.
Official Chengdu airport information
Check whether the operating carrier uses Tianfu (TFU) or Shuangliu (CTU); verify transfer instructions rather than assume an airport from city name.
Visit / transit entry requirements
Hong Kong, China has separate entry requirements. Mainland permission does not itself grant Hong Kong entry, and a mainland exit can consume a single entry.
Official entry and exit information
Macao, China has separate border procedures; recheck the onward mainland entry after leaving it.
