A two-hour train is a five-hour day. Plan the five hours.
Plan the whole day, not just the time spent on the train. Compare regional clusters, door-to-door journeys and the full station name on your ticket. The durations and station notes are planning references last reviewed on 1 November 2026, not live timetables: the fastest service may not run on your date or stop at your station. Check the official railway for the actual service, sale window and availability before booking. This guide does not sell tickets.

| Cluster | Base | Reach | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yangtze Delta | Shanghai | Suzhou and Jiaxing in under half an hour, Hangzhou in about forty-five minutes, Nanjing in about an hour, Huangshan in about two. | The densest cluster in the country. Suzhou, Hangzhou and the water towns can be day trips from one hotel. |
| Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei and the north | Beijing | Tianjin in about half an hour, Shijiazhuang in an hour, Taiyuan and Zhengzhou in a little over two, Shanghai in about four and a quarter. | Beijing is the northern hub, and the Shanghai leg is the one long move that is still comfortable by rail. |
| The southwest | Chengdu | Chongqing in about an hour, Xi'an in about three, Guilin in about five by rail or a short flight. | Chengdu, Chongqing and Xi'an form a workable triangle. Adding Beijing is a seven-and-a-half-hour leg and usually a mistake. |
| The south | Guangzhou | Shenzhen in about half an hour, Hong Kong West Kowloon in under an hour, Guilin in about two, Shanghai by rail only as a long day. | Guangzhou, Guilin and Hong Kong make a tight triangle, and the landscape is the reason to come this far south. |
| Central and northwest links | Wuhan and Xi'an | Beijing to Wuhan in under four hours, Xi'an to Guangzhou over twelve. | These are connectors, not destinations for a first trip. They exist to make a long route possible, not to shorten it. |
Plan in clusters, then connect them once.
A cluster is a base plus the cities an hour away. Almost every comfortable trip in this guide is one cluster, or two clusters joined by a single long leg. A route that hops between clusters three times is a route spent in stations.
The number is train-on-wheels only.
Add hotel to station, the security and ticket queue, the wait on the platform, and the arrival station's distance from where you are sleeping. The four add-ons are routinely two to three hours.
Two trains on the same route can also differ by an hour or more. A flagship service that stops once is not the same product as a train that stops six times, even though both are called high-speed.
| Pair | Rail | Air | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xi'an ↔ Guangzhou | About 12 h 41 m | About 2 h 30 m | Fly. The rail option loses a full day and an evening. |
| Xi'an ↔ Shenzhen | About 7 h 56 m | About 2 h 30 m | Fly. A seven-hour leg plus transfers is not a travel day worth spending. |
| Chengdu ↔ Guangzhou | About 10 h | About 2 h 30 m | Fly. |
| Beijing ↔ Chengdu | About 7 h 30 m | About 3 h | Fly, or accept that the rail day is the whole day. |
| Beijing ↔ Guilin | About 7 h 58 m | About 3 h | Fly. This is the pair people most often get wrong. |
| Shanghai ↔ Chengdu | About 10–11 h | About 3 h | Fly. |
| Shanghai ↔ Xi'an | About 10 h 40 m | About 2 h 30 m | Fly. |
| Beijing ↔ Kunming | About 10 h 24 m | About 4 h | Fly. |
East–west over 1,500 km: fly. North–south trunk lines: rail is fine.
Use distance as a prompt to compare both options, not as an absolute rule. A long east–west rail journey can consume a full day, while a direct flight may preserve an afternoon. Check the actual airport transfers, flight schedule and total fare before deciding.
One cluster, day trips
One base, and cities within an hour as day trips. Shanghai with Suzhou, Hangzhou and a water town is the clearest example: the hotel does not change and every evening returns to the same bed.
- Best for
- Up to seven days
Two clusters, one long leg
Two bases joined once. Shanghai and Beijing are about four and a quarter hours apart, and both ends have their own one-hour ring. One move, two very different trips.
- Best for
- Ten to fourteen days
The southwest on its own
Chengdu, Chongqing and Xi'an are all rail-reachable from each other, and Guilin is an add-on by air. The mistake is adding Beijing to this shape, not the shape itself.
- Best for
- About ten days
The south with landscape
Guangzhou, Guilin and Hong Kong form a triangle with short legs at every side. It is the most geographically efficient route in this guide for a first trip that wants both city and scenery.
- Best for
- Eight to ten days
| Combination | Why it fails |
|---|---|
| Ten days, seven cities | Every day is a station. Nothing is seen properly and nothing is remembered. |
| Beijing + Guilin + Chengdu + Shanghai in fourteen days | Three legs of five to eight hours each. Cut one of them, and the trip becomes a holiday. |
| Xi'an + Guangzhou + Shanghai in ten days | The Xi'an leg is over twelve hours by rail. Either fly it or move Xi'an into the southwest cluster. |
| Guilin + Dunhuang in one trip | A single leg of thirty hours or more. These belong to two different trips. |
| Harbin + Sanya | A three-thousand-kilometre north-to-south crossing. The distance is the itinerary. |
| A new city every two nights | Packing, stations and settling cost half a day each time, and the half days are the trip. |
Fourteen days is not fourteen destinations.
Every move costs half a day of packing, stations and settling, and that half day is taken from the thing you came for. Three bases in two weeks is a holiday; six bases is a logistics exercise with photographs attached.
| City | Stations | The trap |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai | Three main stations | Shanghai Station and Shanghai South are seven kilometres apart, and Hongqiao is enormous: fifteen minutes from the entrance to the furthest gate. |
| Beijing | Four main stations | South for Shanghai, West or Fengtai for Xi'an and Chengdu. Choosing the wrong one is a taxi across the city. |
| Guilin | Three stations | Guilin, Guilin North and Guilin West are not close to each other. For Yangshuo, buy the Yangshuo station ticket. |
| Guangzhou | Four stations | Guangzhou South is in Panyu, about thirty minutes by metro from the centre. It is the station most long-distance trains use. |
| Chongqing | Several stations | North, West and Shapingba serve different lines, and the city's terrain makes a wrong choice expensive in time. |
Read the station name on the ticket, not the city name.
A ticket that says Shanghai is not a ticket from Hongqiao, and a taxi between two Shanghai stations costs more time than the ride you were planning. Confirm the full station name before you leave the hotel.

Confirming which station
Read the station name out loud and ask for confirmation. Shanghai Station and Shanghai South are seven kilometres apart.
您好,我的车票是(日期)(车次),从(站名)出发。请问这个站在哪里?从(酒店中文名)过去大概多久?需要坐地铁还是打车?我需要提前多久到站?谢谢。Changing to an earlier train
Ask what the改签 rules allow before paying a difference. The window and the fee depend on the fare type.
您好,我想改签到今天更早的一班车。请问还有座位吗?需要补差价吗?有手续费吗?如果改到明天,规则一样吗?请把新车次和时间写在纸上,谢谢。Comparing a flight with the train
Ask about the airport's distance from the city, not just the flight time. That is where the comparison is usually won or lost.
您好,我想比较一下坐飞机和高铁。请问从市区到机场要多久?需要提前多久到机场?航班延误常见吗?如果坐高铁,从酒店到车站要多久?请帮我把两边的时间都算一下,谢谢。Luggage on a long rail leg
Ask where the large-luggage rack is for your carriage. It is usually at the end, and the overhead rack will not take a suitcase.
您好,我的车厢是(几号),座位是(几排几座)。我有一个大行李箱,请问大件行李架在哪里?需要我自己搬上去吗?中途下车的人多吗?如果行李架满了,可以放在哪里?谢谢。A late arrival in an unfamiliar city
Tell the hotel the train number and the expected time before you board, not after you arrive.

Book the moment sales open in peak weeks
Spring Festival, the National Day week, the May holiday and the summer rush are the four windows where a popular route sells out in minutes rather than days.
Outside those weeks, days are enough
A normal week usually has seats a few days ahead. The exception is a specific popular departure time, which sells first even on an ordinary Tuesday.
Check the sale window, do not assume it
The advance sales period is published by the railway and has changed before. Look it up for your date rather than trusting a number from a guide, including this one.
The holiday itself changes the sights
A palace on 2 October is a queue, not a courtyard. If the dates are fixed by a flight, plan around the peak hours instead of through them.
Night arrivals deserve a plan
A train arriving after the metro's last service is a taxi, and a taxi needs a Chinese address and a driver who can find the entrance.
New lines change the map
A line under construction can turn a five-hour leg into three within a year. Check the date on any route table, and treat a published opening year as a plan rather than a promise.
Every figure on this page has a date attached.
Durations, station counts and fare references were last reviewed in October 2026 and use the fastest services listed at that time. Schedules change with each timetable adjustment, and an opening date for a new line is a plan until it is running. Treat the page as a planning shape, and the railway's own site as the source for your date.
Should I book trains before I arrive?
For a peak week, yes, the moment sales open. For an ordinary week, booking two or three days ahead is usually enough, and it keeps the itinerary flexible.
Is a rail pass worth it?
There is no national rail pass for foreign visitors in the way some countries have. Tickets are bought per journey, and a multi-leg trip is priced leg by leg.
Can I take a suitcase on a high-speed train?
Yes, and each carriage has a rack at the end for large cases. The overhead rack takes bags, not suitcases, so board early enough to use the end rack.
Are flights actually faster door to door?
Sometimes. A three-hour flight plus two hours at the airport plus two airport transfers can equal a seven-hour train. The comparison is only honest when both ends are counted.
What if I miss a connection?
Tickets are for a specific train, and a missed one is handled by the改签 rules at the station rather than automatically. Build an hour of buffer between two separate tickets.
Do I need to print tickets?
A passport is the travel document at the gate in most cases, and the booking is linked to it. Keep the booking reference on your phone as well, in case a gate needs it.
Is a sleeper train a good idea?
For a long overnight leg it saves a hotel night and a travel day. It also means a shared compartment and a disrupted sleep, which is a poor trade on a three-day trip.
