A long stay is not a long holiday. It is a small administration.
Treat a longer stay as a series of practical arrangements: accommodation registration, connectivity, healthcare and everyday services. Any price ranges are dated references, not current quotations. Visa and work permission must be checked for your own circumstances; this is not individual legal or immigration advice.
- What was checked
- The dated official and publisher references named in this guide's source section. Each reference explains the specific rule or instruction it supports.
- Known limits
- Prices, opening hours, availability and individual account or document eligibility are not live guarantees. Provider conditions and your actual route, passport, device and circumstances can change the answer.
Two providers, not two plans from one
A second eSIM from the same supplier fails with the same supplier. Keep one travel eSIM and one local SIM, or one of each plus your home carrier's roaming as a last resort.
Hotspot the laptop from the phone
Hotel WiFi plus a tunnel is the least stable combination in the building. The phone on mobile data is usually the better uplink for a call.
Put important calls before the evening
Congestion builds in the evening, when the whole city is streaming. A call at 10:00 and the same call at 21:00 are not the same call.
Test the actual device, not the speed test
Join a five-minute call from the room you will work in, on the laptop you will use, at the hour you will work. A speed number does not predict a call.
Count the data you actually use
Documents and email are light; a day of video is not. Choose a plan with a fair-use throttle rather than a hard cap if calls are the point of the trip.
Keep an offline copy of everything that matters
Addresses, the landlord's number, the insurance hotline, the passport scan and the booking confirmations should open with no network at all.
Test the room at the hour you will work in it.
A connection that is fast at 07:00 can be unusable at 21:00, and a hotel's WiFi can be fine on a phone and hopeless on a laptop. The only test that predicts your month is a real call from your real device in your real room.
| Type | Typical span | What it adds | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel, negotiated | One to two weeks | Daily cleaning, a front desk that handles registration, and someone to receive a parcel. | The published nightly rate is not the monthly rate. Ask the property directly for a weekly or monthly price and get the total in writing. |
| Serviced apartment | One to three months | A kitchen, a washing machine and a weekly clean, with the registration usually handled by the operator. | Confirm the utility and cleaning inclusions, and whether the monthly price changes for a shorter booking. |
| Private rental | One month and up | The lowest monthly cost and the most space, usually with a Chinese-language contract. | Registration becomes your problem, the deposit terms are negotiated, and a short notice period is worth paying for. |
Registration is the item that decides the room.
A hotel registers you as part of check-in. A serviced operator usually does the same. A private landlord often cannot, and that turns a cheap flat into an administrative problem. Ask who registers you before you discuss price.
Buy it in person with the passport
Registration is tied to a document, so the card has to be opened by the person who will use it. A card handed to you by someone else is registered to them.
Ask what the monthly price includes
Data, calls and SMS are priced separately on some plans. A cheap headline number with no data is not a working number for a month.
Check the contract length and the exit
A twelve-month contract taken for a six-week stay is a bill you keep paying after you leave. Ask whether it can be stopped and how.
Keep the physical card and the packaging
A replacement or a cancellation usually needs the card number and the registration details, both printed on the packaging you were about to throw away.
A local number routes through the local network
The number does not change what the network does. If your work depends on a particular route, keep a second path that does not depend on this SIM.
Answer it, or it becomes useless
Couriers, landlords and clinics all call. A number that only receives SMS solves registration and nothing else.
The number is only useful if you answer it.
A courier, a landlord and a clinic will all dial it. A number that exists only to receive verification codes solves registration and nothing after it, and a data-only plan with no voice is a common and expensive misunderstanding at the counter.
Bring the documents, all of them, once
Passport, valid visa or residence permit, a registered address and something showing the purpose. A missing item usually means a second appointment, not a second visit that day.
Go to a large branch, not the nearest one
Staff experience with foreign passports varies by branch. A main branch in the city centre has usually done it before.
Say the purpose in one sentence
Salary, rent, daily spending. A purpose the bank cannot record is a reason to decline the application.
Ask what the account does not fix
A local account changes your own limits; it does not make every merchant accept every card, and it does not create credit history.
Keep the paperwork after you leave
Account statements are the evidence a future visa application or a tax question will ask for. Photograph everything before it goes into a drawer.
Close it properly, or leave it dormant deliberately
An abandoned account with a small balance is an administrative problem later. Decide which one you are doing.
Branch practice varies. This is why the answer differs.
Two visitors with the same documents can be treated differently at two branches of the same bank. That is not a reason to argue with the counter; it is a reason to try a main branch in the city centre, where foreign passports are routine.
Book the room, not just the desk
An open floor is not a place for a client call. Ask whether meeting rooms are included in the monthly pass or billed by the hour.
Wired beats wireless for the big call
If the desk has an ethernet port, use it. Ask before you sign up, because not every seat has one.
Check the hours the building is open
Some spaces close at night and at weekends, which matters if your calls are with another time zone.
Coffee shops are for email, not calls
Background noise reads as unprofessional and the staff will eventually ask you to leave the table. Use them for the two-hour gap, not the interview.
A headset with a boom mic is not optional
Laptop microphones pick up the room, the air conditioning and the corridor. This is the cheapest upgrade to how you sound.
Say the time zone out loud, twice
China keeps one time zone across the whole country. A colleague who assumes otherwise will miss the call, and the calendar invite will look correct to both of you.
The room is the weak link, not the desk.
Housekeeping starts early and the corridor carries sound. If your calls land in the local morning, a co-working pass is buying silence, not status. If they land at night, the room is fine and the pass is not worth it.
Remote work is not a documented permission
A tourist entry permits visiting. Whether working remotely for an overseas employer fits inside it is a grey area that this guide will not resolve for you, because no page resolves it.
Overstaying is a fine and a record
Staying past the permitted date is a violation with its own penalty scale set by the exit-entry authority. Ask the authority for your case rather than trusting a number from a blog.
Every move needs a new registration
Registration is tied to the address, not to the person. A hotel usually handles it; a private flat usually does not, and the deadline is short.
Keep the rental paper trail
A registration slip, a contract and a receipt are what a bank, a telecom counter and an extension application all ask for.
Do not treat this page as legal advice
Entry rules carry effective dates and change. For anything that affects your status, the immigration authority and your own consulate are the two sources that count.
Health cover is a separate question
A longer stay multiplies the chance of needing care. Check what your policy covers here, and how it pays, before the first clinic visit rather than after.
An unanswered question is the honest answer here.
Remote work for an overseas employer on a tourist entry remains a grey area, while employment requires the appropriate work authorization. Do not treat a tourist entry as permission to work without written confirmation from the competent authority. If your stay depends on the answer, ask the exit-entry administration in the city where you are staying, and keep the reply.
CHINESE HELP CARDS · WRITTEN FOR THESE SITUATIONS
A SIM registered in my own name
Bring the passport. Registration is in person, and a card bought for you by someone else is not yours.
Opening an account at a bank counter
Say the purpose out loud: salary, rent, daily spending. A vague purpose is the most common reason to be sent away.
Asking what the building needs for registration
Ask the property manager, not the landlord. Registration is usually the manager's job and the landlord's promise.
Questions before signing a monthly rental
Ask about the deposit's return, the notice period and the internet in this flat. All three are cheaper to ask now than to argue later.
A desk and a room for a call

Explaining a longer stay at a clinic
Say how long you are staying, because it changes whether a follow-up appointment is possible.
Use these cards for common counter procedures. Fill in your real stay length and city before showing a card.
Can I rent a flat for one month?
Some operators and individual owners accept it; many prefer six months or a year. Expect a higher monthly price for a short term, and expect the registration question to be the one that ends the conversation.
Is the deposit refundable?
Usually, against the condition of the flat and the notice period, and often after the utility bills are settled. Get the conditions written into the contract, not agreed verbally.
Do I need to register with the police myself?
If a hotel or a serviced operator registers you, no. If you rent privately, the registration usually falls to you or the landlord, and it has to be done within the deadline set for your city.
Will my home bank card work for a month?
It will work where it is accepted, and it will still meet the foreign-card limits that a short trip never notices. A local account or a local payment balance is the usual answer for a month.
Can I get a residence permit on a tourist entry?
Converting status inside China is restricted and depends on the entry type and the purpose. Ask the exit-entry administration about your situation before your permitted stay expires.
What internet speed should I expect in a flat?
Building wiring varies more than city averages do. Test the actual flat on your own device before you commit, and ask which provider the building is wired for.
Is co-working worth it if I have a hotel room?
It is worth it for calls and for the two hours when housekeeping needs the room. It is not worth it if your work is text and email.

China CDC: health advice and disease information
Seasonal health advice and outbreak information published in Chinese. Useful when a symptom pattern is spreading locally; not a substitute for a clinician who has examined you.
National Healthcare Security Administration
The body behind public medical insurance. Visitors generally pay as self-payers, so read this as context for how the system is financed rather than as a route to coverage for a foreign passport.
Common emergency numbers: 110, 119, 120, 122
Police 110, fire 119, ambulance 120, traffic accident 122. These are the numbers to keep on a phone lock screen; they are not a translation service and do not replace the local emergency instructions at a site.
Country and region information: find the Chinese mission that covers you
The index for locating the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for a given country. For a lost passport, the useful page is your own country's mission in China, and the entry point here tells you which Chinese mission handles the reverse direction.
