Save the destination before you need the ride.
Match the Chinese place name, complete address and entrance before choosing a route. For rail, use the official booking channel, carry the original document used for the ticket and allow for the staffed document lane. A map pin, e-ticket or app confirmation does not replace those checks.
- What was checked
- Official railway instructions for passport booking and document checks, the railway restricted-item catalogue, and map or ride-provider instructions linked below.
- Known limits
- Map coverage, business details, account review, ticket availability, fares and pickup times vary by provider, traveler and date. Item rules depend on the actual category; this guide does not book travel or guarantee a route.
A translated label is not an address check.
No map provider is guaranteed to offer the same app-store access, English coverage, business data or route quality for every journey. Test the actual destination, compare the Chinese name and address with the venue or booking provider, and save a second way to find it.
Copy the exact Chinese place name from the actual provider
Use the hotel confirmation, attraction's official page or rail ticket—not an old review or a user-edited listing alone. Check whether the name includes a branch, terminal or station suffix. For a station, copy the full ticket station name exactly as shown.
Compare the address and district before accepting a pin
Read the Chinese address and compare it with the provider's information. A place can have the same English name in several districts. If the address is missing or contradicts the reservation, stop and ask the provider rather than navigate toward the nearest similar result.
Choose the entrance or pickup point, not only the building
A large station, hospital, attraction or shopping complex can have entrances on different roads. Find the entrance specified for your task, check which side of the road it is on and look for an official ride-hailing pickup zone. The map's front door may not be the permitted car stop.
Read the route's last segment in Chinese
Save the destination station, line direction, exit letter and walking entrance where applicable. Underground positioning can drift, so use physical signs, exit numbers and staff directions when the phone's blue dot disagrees with the building in front of you.
Make the details available without data or a login
Keep an offline screenshot and a plain-text Chinese address card for every essential destination. Include a phone number you may legally use and the booking reference. Do not leave the only copy inside a mini program that may require a new verification step when you are already late.

Start with the official 12306 channel and your own document
Use the official English website or app, or a station ticket counter. Register with the contact method the current form supports, select passport as the document type and enter every traveler exactly as shown on the passport bio page. Never borrow an identity or alter a name to pass verification.
Resolve verification before the travel day
Follow the current automatic-verification result. If it fails, correct the information and use the official online document-upload or original-document station-counter process. Every passenger can need verification. The 2024 government guide says manual review usually takes three to five working days, so do not leave it until the station; this is not a guaranteed approval time.
Verify the exact date, train and both station names
Beijing, Shanghai and other cities have several stations with similar names or suffixes. Confirm the departure date around midnight, train number, exact departure and arrival stations, travel time and transfer details before paying. A G, D or other letter identifies a train category, not a universal speed or comfort guarantee for every service.
Choose the fare and pay once, then inspect the order
Review passenger, seat class, fare, currency and any third-party service fee before authorization. Use the payment channel accepted by that provider and inspect the completed order before assuming a retry is needed. Slow China does not sell or hold rail tickets and does not compare live inventory.
Save the useful itinerary—not just a payment screenshot
Save the train number, date, full station names, departure time, carriage and seat if assigned, plus the original-document requirement and official support route. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not itself a ticket. Ask the actual provider how to change or refund under your fare and remaining time.
The current verification status belongs to the traveler and each passenger. The 2024 official guide's usual three-to-five-working-day manual-review estimate is retained as dated context, not an approval promise.
Plan a buffer around your real station
At a large unfamiliar station, 45–60 minutes before departure can be a starting planning buffer, not a railway rule. Add time for the journey to the station, luggage, security, finding the hall and a staffed document lane. Follow your ticket and station notices if they require more; no single buffer fits every departure.
Complete security before the departure hall
Keep your ticket information and original document accessible, place bags through the inspection process and respond to any item-specific check. Do not assume airport liquid rules apply or that a foreign passport grants an exemption. Special-event or local controls can change what security asks.
Match the train to the departure board
Use the train number, departure time and destination rather than recognize a platform by appearance. Find the ticket gate or waiting area, watch for changes and listen for staff announcements. Chinese numerals and station suffixes matter when several trains leave close together.
Use the original booking document—and the staffed lane when needed
Official 12306 help lists certain machine-readable documents for self-service checks and directs passengers using other documents through a staffed lane with the original valid booking document. An ordinary foreign passport is not promised here as a universally readable gate card. Keep it with you for entry, exit and onboard inspection.
Find the carriage and seat, then keep the destination visible
Check the carriage and seat in the order and the platform or carriage signs. Keep luggage in the permitted spaces without blocking doors or other passengers. Before boarding, confirm the train is going to your ticketed destination; if staff redirects you, follow the operating railway's instructions.
Prepare the exit before the train arrives
Check the arrival station and any transfer or pickup plan before arrival, keep the original document ready and follow the exit signs. If a gate does not recognize the document or the ticket record is questioned, use the staffed channel rather than follow another passenger through. Save the next Chinese address for the last-mile journey.
The original valid booking document travels with you.
Use the self-service or staffed route appropriate to your actual document. A paper itinerary or reimbursement receipt is not a substitute for the e-ticket and document inspection.
Open the staffed-lane Chinese cardRead a power bank in Wh, not an assumed mAh label
The official rail catalogue permits clearly marked power banks and lithium batteries up to 100Wh per item, with a specific exception for qualifying lithium-battery wheelchairs. Inspect the printed Wh rating and legibility before travel. Do not treat an approximate mAh conversion as permission when voltage or labeling is unclear.
Do not import the airport ‘100ml rule’ into rail travel
The rail list does not set one blanket 100ml limit for every drink or ordinary liquid. It has category-specific limits, including 100ml for individual non-aerosol daily-use items containing flammable ingredients, 150ml for specified pressurized containers, and separate alcohol rules. Check the actual product, ingredients and latest railway notice.
Check knives, tools and everyday objects before packing
Controlled knives are prohibited; the catalogue also distinguishes certain sharp objects and tools that cannot be carried in the cabin but may be checked where the railway provides that service. Lighters and some sprays have quantity or container limits. Ask the railway about the exact item instead of assuming a small pocket tool is allowed.
Keep security decisions separate from city-metro rules
Railway, metro, airline and venue security lists are not interchangeable. A battery or spray accepted on one journey may need another check elsewhere. Pack uncertain items where staff can inspect them, keep receipts for disputes and do not conceal an item or argue your way through a checkpoint.
Choose a legal, identifiable pickup point
At an airport or railway station, follow current signs to the official taxi queue or designated ride-hailing zone instead of accepting an unsolicited approach in the terminal. In a large complex, identify the entrance number, road and level. If the app places the pin across a divided road, correct it before requesting rather than expect the driver to cross.
Set the exact Chinese destination and review the offer
Match the Chinese address, district and branch before requesting. Review vehicle type, upfront estimate or pricing terms, toll or waiting information and cancellation conditions where shown. A displayed estimate is not a guarantee against traffic, route changes or additional disclosed charges.
Match the car and driver before getting in
Compare the plate, vehicle and driver information in the actual order. Wait in a safe visible place, keep your belongings and do not accept a substitute car merely because someone knows your destination. Use the app's verification process if one is shown; do not share payment passwords or one-time account codes.
Use in-app Chinese messages instead of improvising a call
The current DiDi listing describes English–Chinese driver messaging. Send a precise entrance, side of road or landmark message, and keep the destination card ready. If a driver calls, you can use a prepared sentence or ask a nearby staff member for help; never let an unverified caller take over your account or payment.
Review the fare and keep the order trail
At the end, inspect the actual fare, route, toll or adjustment, currency and payment result before leaving the order. For a street taxi, ask for the meter and an itemized receipt where the normal local process provides one. For a discrepancy, use the provider's official support and keep the plate, time and route—not an informal off-app payment.
Ride-hailing app
Useful when you have a working account, a verified pickup and destination, data and an accepted payment method. It is not necessarily available or cheapest at every hour.
Official taxi queue
A practical airport or station fallback when an app fails. Follow the staffed queue, show the Chinese address and clarify the meter or normal fare process before setting off.
A staffed transport desk
Ask for the currently operating public-transport or official-car option if neither your app nor the normal taxi route works. Slow China does not dispatch cars or negotiate a fare for you.
CHINESE HELP CARDS · COMPLETE THE BLANKS BEFORE SHOWING
Show the driver the exact destination
Complete the hotel or station's official Chinese details before showing the card.
您好,请带我去这个地方:______(中文名称),地址是______。请先核对一下是不是这个分店/入口。Explain where you are waiting
Replace the blanks with an entrance number, level or a visible official landmark. Do not invent a location you cannot identify.
您好,我在______(入口/楼层)等您,靠近______。我在应用地图标记的上车点附近,穿______颜色的衣服。Ask for the staffed rail-document lane
Use at the station when the self-service gate cannot process your booking document.
您好,我用这本护照购买了火车票,车次是______。请问外国护照应该走哪个人工核验和检票通道?Confirm the station and train
Use before leaving for the station or at a staffed counter when two names look similar.
您好,我的车票是______月______日______点,从______站到______站,车次______。请问我应该去哪个车站和候车区?Ask about the meter and a receipt
For a normal street taxi or official taxi queue. For an app-booked ride, inspect its own fare terms instead.
您好,请按计价器计费。到目的地后,请给我行程票据,谢谢。Do I need a paper ticket after buying on 12306?
For an e-ticket, retain the e-ticket information and bring the original valid document used for booking for entry, exit and onboard inspection. 12306 says an itinerary sheet and reimbursement receipt are not tickets. Use the machine-readable or staffed process applicable to your actual document and station, rather than assume an ordinary passport always opens every gate.
Does a verified 12306 account verify every companion too?
Not necessarily. Add each passenger with the exact document details and inspect that passenger's status. Official guidance provides online document upload and an original-document station-counter route when verification fails. Do not wait until the departure day to discover that a companion cannot be ticketed.
Is G always the best train and is a two-hour route really two hours?
Train letters help identify service categories, but compare the actual schedule, stops, fare, departure and arrival stations and transfer requirements. Add hotel-to-station travel, security, waiting and the last mile to the journey. A six-hour flight-versus-rail threshold is only a planning heuristic, not a railway rule.
Can I bring any drink or power bank onto a train?
There is no single airport-style 100ml limit for every liquid on a train. Check the official item category, including flammable ingredients, aerosol containers and alcohol. Clearly marked power banks and lithium batteries are limited to 100Wh per item under the rail catalogue, with a stated wheelchair exception. Local or temporary controls may require more checks.
Is an upfront app price always the final taxi fare?
Not necessarily. Read whether the screen shows an estimate or fixed pricing, plus route, waiting, toll and cancellation conditions. At the end, compare the order and actual payment. For a street taxi, use the ordinary meter and receipt process. Raise a discrepancy through the provider rather than pay an unexplained second amount off-app.
What if I cannot understand the driver's phone call?
Use the app's bilingual message feature where available, send the prepared Chinese pickup card and describe a precise entrance or landmark. Ask a uniformed station, airport or hotel employee for help if needed. Do not share account passwords, payment PINs or one-time codes with a caller, and do not move to an unsafe or unofficial pickup point.
Can Slow China check live train availability or call me a car?
No. This guide does not provide booking, dispatch or live-availability services. Use the actual rail, map, ride-hailing or staffed transport provider for current inventory, prices, account results and pickup conditions. Not every app, station or payment route has been personally tested for this guide.

Guide to Identity Verification for Buying Train Tickets in China
Registration, exact passport details, automatic verification, manual document upload, passenger verification and the station-counter alternative. The 2024 guide describes three to five working days as usual for manual review—not a guarantee for a new account.
How to enter the station and board with a 12306 ticket
Bring the original valid document used for the booking. Passengers using documents other than the listed machine-readable documents complete real-name and entry/exit checks through a staffed lane.
Catalogue of Items Prohibited or Restricted for Railway Passengers
Clearly marked power banks and lithium batteries are limited to 100Wh each, except qualifying lithium-battery wheelchairs. Liquids are not governed by one blanket 100ml rule; inspect the item category and current station instructions.
Discover Shanghai with Amap's new English map
The official announcement describes an English map for international users with English labels for attractions, restaurants and hotels, available through overseas app stores. Store region, account, map data and ride features still need a current device check.
DiDi China: Ride Hailing
The publisher describes English ride-hailing, global mobile-number login, bilingual driver messages, international bank-card options and 24/7 in-app English support. Verify the current store, account and payment result rather than treat a listing as an availability promise.
