A parcel addressed in English is a parcel that goes to a locker.
Get the hotel's approval, a complete Chinese address and a usable handover arrangement before sending a parcel. Storage periods, pickup codes and courier practice are not permanent guarantees. This guide covers ordinary traveler purchases and hotel delivery, not wholesale, buying agents or international freight.
- What was checked
- The dated official and publisher references named in this guide's source section. Each reference explains the specific rule or instruction it supports.
- Known limits
- Prices, opening hours, availability and individual account or document eligibility are not live guarantees. Provider conditions and your actual route, passport, device and circumstances can change the answer.
Large marketplace
Millions of independent sellers, from factories to one-person shops.
- What it is good at
- The widest range and the lowest prices, with strong buyer-protection rules inside the platform.
- What to watch
- Delivery is slow and quality depends entirely on which seller you picked. A shop with no history is a gamble, not a bargain.
Retail-style platform
Mostly first-party stock plus selected third-party sellers, with its own warehousing.
- What it is good at
- Fast delivery, predictable packaging, and a return process that a visitor can follow.
- What to watch
- Higher prices and a narrower catalogue. Not every foreign card or payment app is accepted in every checkout.
The seller matters more than the platform.
On a marketplace, the seller you chose is the party responsible for the item, the packaging and the return. Read the shop's age and its rating before the price, because a low price from a shop with no history is a gamble.
Use the Chinese property name, not the brand in English
Copy the Chinese name and address from the booking confirmation or a map listing. 'The Marriott' does not resolve to a building in a courier's system.
Put the front desk in the receiver field
The receiver line should carry your name, the check-in date and 前台代收. That is what makes a staff member sign for it rather than a machine.
Add one sentence about the locker
'No Chinese number, cannot receive a pickup code, deliver to the front desk only.' This single line prevents the most common failure in this guide.
Give a phone number that someone answers
The hotel's front-desk number works only with the property's permission. Ask first, and tell them roughly when the parcel will arrive.
Never use a locker address
Some listings let you pick up at a locker or a pickup station nearby. For a visitor without a local number that is a dead end, however convenient it looks.
Save the address as one text block
Write it once, correctly, in a note. Reassembling an address at a checkout counter with a countdown running is how a digit gets dropped.
The receiver line is where the front desk is named.
An address alone sends a parcel to a building. The receiver line decides whether a person signs for it. Write your name, the check-in date and 前台代收 in that field, and the parcel stops being an unattended box.
A pickup code needs a Chinese number
Lockers and staffed pickup stations send the code by SMS. A data-only travel eSIM receives nothing, and the parcel is returned after the holding period.
The front desk is the human override
A staffed reception can sign for a parcel. That is the whole reason the receiver line names the front desk and not you.
A returned parcel is not always refunded
Return shipping, a restocking deduction or a closed dispute window can all leave you without the item and without the money. Preventing the return is cheaper than arguing about it.
Check where the parcel actually is
The tracking page shows the station name. If it is already in a locker, go to the property's front desk with the tracking number and ask them to call the courier.
No Chinese number means no pickup code.
This is the most common way a visitor's parcel is lost, and it is not theft. The parcel sits in a locker or a station, the code goes to a number you do not have, and after the holding period it goes back to the seller.
Aim for one or two days before you arrive
That window lets the property hold it without a long storage question, and leaves room for a one-day delay.
Ask how many days they will hold it
Storage periods differ by property and by parcel size, and an unclaimed parcel can be returned without notice.
Avoid pre-sale listings before a move
A pre-sale item ships when it ships. It is the single most common reason a parcel arrives after the guest has left.
Pay in full, never cash on delivery
A front desk will not pay a courier on your behalf, and a cash-on-delivery parcel is refused at the door.
Use the next hotel deliberately
Shipping ahead to a later city is a real technique for a multi-city trip. It only works if that property has agreed and the dates are written into the receiver line.
Keep the order page until you have the item
Screenshots of the order, the tracking and the chat with the seller are what a dispute asks for, and the app's history is not always enough.
Pre-sale is the wrong product for a travelling address.
A pre-sale item ships on the seller's schedule, not on yours, and the delivery date shown at checkout is an estimate rather than a commitment. If you are changing cities, pay more for stock that ships today.
A drone is city-restricted, not just flight-restricted
Beijing's rule restricts bringing drones and core components into the city, with a narrow exception for a registered device carried by its owner. Buy at the end of the trip, or ship it home.
A gimbal camera is not a drone
A pocket gimbal is a camera. The restriction targets aircraft and their core parts, so do not refuse to buy the camera you actually wanted because of a rule about something else.
A power bank needs a visible certification mark
Without a clear mark it cannot go on a domestic flight. Look at the marking before you discuss the price, especially at a market stall.
Check the airline's battery rule, not just the shop's
Watt-hour limits, spare-battery carry-on rules and checked-baggage bans are airline and authority rules. A shop that says 'it flies' is not the authority.
Cash limits apply to what leaves with you
Renminbi and foreign cash have separate exit limits, and a large purchase paid in cash still has to be documented to be refunded.
Your home customs is a separate check
Food, plants, meat products, imitations and lithium batteries are the four categories most often stopped on return. Check your own country's page, not a travel blog.
Buy the drone at the end, or post it home.
Beijing's rule restricting drones and their core components from entering the city applies to a traveller passing through, not only to residents. A device bought in Shanghai and carried to Beijing can be confiscated there, and 'I was only transiting' is not an exception the text provides.
One-hour delivery is a different product
It runs from local stores with a small catalogue and a real-time stock count. It is the right tool for a charger, a cable, water or medicine, not for a bargain.
A convenience shop is faster than any app
Cables, adapters, SIM tools, water and umbrellas are on the shelf downstairs. Walking down beats waiting for a rider.
Electronics chains exist in every big mall
A mall is also a place to see the item, compare two models and pay with a foreign card. That is worth an afternoon when the purchase matters.
Ask about the warranty in writing
A local warranty may not be honoured in your country. Ask whether it is international, and get the answer typed into the chat rather than spoken.
CHINESE HELP CARDS · WRITTEN FOR THESE SITUATIONS
The delivery note with a locker ban
This sentence is the one that saves the parcel. Without it the default is the nearest locker.
Asking the hotel before you order
Four questions, asked once by message. Keep the reply, because the front desk at midnight is a different shift.
Talking to a courier who calls
Say where you are standing and what you are wearing. Those two facts end the call faster than any address.
Returning something that is wrong
Say the order number and the reason in one line. A return is started in the app, then completed with the courier.
Collecting from a pickup station
Bring the phone number the parcel was sent to and the tracking number. Both are what the counter searches by.
Asking whether an item can fly
Ask at the counter before paying. An answer after security is a bin, not a refund.
Use these notes for common parcel-handover situations. Replace the blanks with the property's Chinese name, your dates and your room before sending.
Can I use my foreign card on these platforms?
Some checkouts accept international cards and some do not, and the answer changes more often than any guide can track. Test with a small order before you rely on it for something expensive.
Do I need a Chinese phone number to order?
Registering and receiving delivery calls usually want one. Without it, the front desk becomes your contact point, which is why the front-desk arrangement is not optional for a visitor.
What if the parcel is late?
Check the tracking, then ask the property whether a parcel arrived for you. A courier who could not reach you often leaves it with the desk anyway, and nobody tells you.
Can I ship to a hotel I have not booked yet?
Only with that property's agreement, and only if the dates are inside its storage window. An unbooked hotel has no reason to hold anything for you.
Is it cheaper than buying at home?
Sometimes, and the answer depends on your passport, your home tax and the item. A single dated price comparison from someone else's trip is a starting point, not a rule.
What about buying a phone or a laptop here?
Check the charger plug, the warranty region, the keyboard layout and whether the model is the international version. A cheaper device that needs an adapter and cannot be serviced at home is not cheaper.
Should I use a buying agent?
This guide does not recommend agents or freight forwarders. That industry has collapsed around buyers before, and a recommendation would be a promise about a company's survival that no guide can make.
Official and publisher references used in this guide
These are external references. They are not live availability, price, approval or service guarantees, and each date marks the point after which a rule may have changed.
12315: consumer complaint and report channel
The official route for a consumer dispute over a meal, a delivery order or a purchase. It records a complaint; it does not order a refund, send an inspector to your table, or act as an emergency line.
Departure tax refund: threshold lowered to 200 yuan
A same-day purchase of at least 200 yuan in the same refund shop can qualify, down from the previous 500 yuan. Eligibility still depends on the shop, the goods, the departure window and the documents, so the number alone does not guarantee a refund.
Paying in Shanghai with an overseas card or phone
A city-level explanation of card, mobile and cash acceptance. It reflects one city's published guidance, so it is not evidence that every merchant in another city behaves the same way.
The Palace Museum: real-name advance booking
The museum's own booking and notice pages. Timed entry, closed Mondays and holiday sell-outs are operational facts that a printed itinerary cannot override; check here before fixing a Beijing day.
Ministry of Culture and Tourism: scenic-area and travel notices
National-level tourism notices, including seasonal travel reminders. It publishes guidance, not individual venue availability, and it does not sell tickets.
Common emergency numbers: 110, 119, 120, 122
Police 110, fire 119, ambulance 120, traffic accident 122. These are the numbers to keep on a phone lock screen; they are not a translation service and do not replace the local emergency instructions at a site.
Updates and corrections
The dates above apply only to the checks described here. Recheck current prices, opening hours, availability and account or document eligibility with the responsible provider before you rely on them. When an official rule changes, the affected guidance and its review date should be updated. To report a specific change, email support@slowchinaguide.com with the place, date and current source.
